I believe if you are using component cables, the highest resolution you will get is 480p. But if you connect with VGA, you can upscale to 720p.

The DVD format requires that it only allow 480p. Using the VGA output of the 360 is a work-around that allows the 360 to upscale DVDs to whatever resolution you have the VGA output set to. This won't necessarily make DVDs look fantastic to your eyes, but I'd be willing to bet proper calibration of your display for 480p content from the 360 (using the Avia or DVE disc, or even the THX calibration tools found on many DVDs) will help a ton.

Actually I believe that now with the Nov update you can upscale to 1080p with VGA 1080i with Component.

Your sweet spot is 720p more than likely as it is your native resolution. For DVD's I believe, the only way to upconvert them is via the VGA Cable. Games and HD DVD via component can go upto 1080i but component will not output DVD higher than 480p.

You can upconvert DVDs over VGA, or you can let your TV do the scaling. Whether the improvement is enough to justify the cost of the VGA cable is up to you.
