View Full Version : Burn in. Really?

I posted this in another spot. Thought it might be of interest here.

One of my last stops today was one of my rental accounts. They had an 42" ED PDP with 1649 hours on it. It had been in and out numerous times, twisted and tweaked about every way it could go - no burn in precautions - just use, and probably some abuse. When I walked up to it - it was on torch mode - no orbiter in use - and running 4.3 with bars on the side for no telling how long.
I turned the orbiter on, took it out of torch mode, and filled the screen. Then I done a whitewash to check for any IR. There was none. Amazing what these new PDP's will take.

Just going from what I've read from various people, not everyone is so lucky.

I know that is true, but for the life of me I do not know why some have issues and some do not. There was no precautions made with this set, and I would think that any major brand uses just as good a PDP panel as LG does.
It really does make one think.

Loretta Castorini (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093565/quotes) had no luck... until she met Ronny Cammareri. :)

Ugh. I just got my 9UK and I was doing my break-in by watching Discovery HD. I thought I was fine by leaving it on over night and setting the receiver's standby mode off, but when I woke up this morning there was the Dish Network logo moving in different places every 5 seconds. I turned it off only to see a few dish network logos burned in to the screen.

I tried watching Discovery for about 15 minutes before work to see if the logos would disappear but I can still see the slight IR of the Logos in a dark room on a black screen with no input signal.

Am I screwed?

Depends what you mean by screwed. The uneven wear those logo's caused will go away though it may take anywhere from 24-240 hours till they do.

I suggest you find another way to break in your set in the meantime, such as a break in DVD.

I tried using a DVD yesterday before using the Discovery channel..

I put the DVD on repeat, and after the first run through, my dvd player popped up with the Parental control where it asks "Yes" or "no" to allow it to play the DVD. So I feared it would do that each time.

PHOSPHORS!!!! Phosphors give off light. The more phosphors give off light, the less light they have to give. Phosphors will dim down. This is a fact. However, the other fact is that CRT use phosphors. Their phospors dim down. Plasmas use phosphors. These phosphors will dim down, over time, but over a long time. Did you have any issue with image burn-in with your CRT TV? If not, you probably have nothing to fear about plasma either. With any phosphor based display, leaving a set pattern up for a long period of time is not all that good.

If you insist on watching a totally white screen on a plasma, you may see an old (and very slight) burned-in image. If you are going to watch TV, then it probably won't bother you.

My mother in law was visiting from Japan when my 9uk arrived.
She was amused that I took such care with the break in process.
Apparently such things are unheard of amongst consumers in Japan.
Just plug it in and go.

She has a Panasonic VIERA 37" TH37PX60U

I however, will continue to be careful, as she has a lot more money than I do.

You can use this one

Supposedly it's 16 hours of solid color images with no menu's.
