View Full Version : What is up with the late reviews lately?

Why are sites so freaking slow lately with reviews? High Def Digest JUST put up the review for Saw III even though we should have had one BEFORE The freaking movie came out. Same goes with Mummy Returns on the HD-DVD side, it took them 4 days AFTER it came out to get a review up. Plus there are still movies that have yet to have a review. What gives? I can understand a place like DVDTalk taking a while sicne they review everything, but HDD only seems to review High Def releases.

I still haven't seen Crank or Descent reviews from any sites yet.

You're right on that. I just watched The Descent last night, it was all right. Quality wise, the video was good most of the time, but a lot of scenes are filled with grain. However, it looks more like grain that was filmed there intentionally. However, the ending to the movie was terrible and is the only reason I'd rather watch The Cave again over this.

There's 2 endings to that movie.

There is? Was it on the Rated version? Well, it is a little late now since I already sent it back to Netflix. What is the other ending?

SPOILER SPOILER

The one I saw had the girl crying in the cave as the credits started to roll.

Hmmmm..... Why doesn't someone just tell him the other ending and put in large Bold Text "SPOILER - DON'T READ"

decent is almost unwatchable unless you have a really good microdisplay or CRT. Too many dark scenes that made my LCD projecton EMO itself.

I have the HD-A1, but I'm taking back my XBOX 360 this morning to Best Buy to exchange it for the 60GB PS3. HELLO FORMAT NEUTRALITY!!! But I digress...

I rented the SD DVD since it isn't out on HD-DVD. I'm not typically a big fan of horror/slasher type movies, but this movie doesn't fit that mold and it really had a good story, good character development and solid acting. I have a biology degree so I also appreciated the ____________. I watched the movie at home, by myself in broad daylight and I almost sh*t myself at least 3 times. There are a lot of dark scenes, but dude, have you ever been spelunking? Caves are dark. It added to the suspense in my opinion.

Oh yeah, the most unrealistic part of the movie? Not once did anyone step in guano.

The big reviewers get paid for reviews.

If the Company Doesn't throw them a Disc or pay them. they get no review.

I thought I read somewhere that the alternate ending is only on the European version. It's definitely not on the SD DVD and from the review link above, it doesn't appear to be on the U.S. BD version either.

I also read somewhere here on AVS that the European version is 15-20 minutes longer. Something about how they had to shorten it for us "impatient" Americans. I'm an American (the best kind actually, a Texan :p ) and I'd like to see the extra 15-20 minutes.

I thought the Unrated version WAS the European version???

All of your information is wrong. There is an SD unrated version, which is the same as the BD unrated version, which is the same as the SD R2 version, which is the same the version released in Europe. You'll get the correct information why the ending was changed for American audiences by watching the director's interview on the topic in the extras.

BTW: I own the R2 SD version and BD unrated version.

Try watching the family-friendly version of Crank. Video is the same but the audio track is edited for content. It's pretty funny.

The big reviewers get paid for reviews.

If the Company Doesn't throw them a Disc or pay them. they get no review.

The movie studios don't pay anyone for reviews. That would be a clear conflict of interest and totally unethical.

They do provide screener discs, however. Review sites rely on the screeners. If reviewers were forced to buy all of their discs at retail, they would quickly go broke and you would get no more reviews from anyone.

If the studio's PR department is slow in providing screeners or neglects to provide one at all, naturally you are likely to see a delay or lack of review.

It's a lot of work to write a decent disc reviews, especially to crank them out at the rate that Peter does for HighDefDigest.

Bear with me, I want to make sure I understand.

So, if I've seen the unrated SD DVD, then I've seen the extended European version, but with a different ending for us Americans?

I started watching the extras, but didn't get all the way through them.

If my first statement is correct, then how do I see the original ending?

If you've seen the ending with the birthday cake you HAVE seen the full European and unrated version, as it was released over there first. The film is the same in the U.S. version except it cuts to the credits right after Juno shows up in the jeep.

The US unrated uncut version is the R2 version released on video and in the British theaters. They are one in the same. If there is a 20-30 min longer version it's not available through studio channels and not an official release....but I highly doubt there a cut as you are describing currently available any where. If I am wrong, I would love to see a link to the official information

Considering how inaccurate the reviewers are in their evaluations, it is not such a loss.

The only thing you can count on is that if they say it looks terrible, it probably does, but if they say it looks great, that can never be relied on.

That's a pretty sweeping statement. I think Josh at DVDtalk does a good job and I also like Widescreen Review. Like movie reviewers, there are certain folks that have similar sensibilities to mine..so I tend to lean towards their reviews. With time I've compared what Josh has written and what is said in WSR, both tend to mirror what I see in my own set up. .....not always, but pretty consistent.

Perhaps you're right. Most of the reviews I've seen have been from HDD and HTS. My statement described my experience with those reviews. It may be the case that other reviewers are more reliable.

In reference to HDD, I spoke with Jed and Peter the other day and they both mentioned that the number of releases has been overwhelming lately (mostly BR). Also keep in mind that reviewing is not all that Peter does.
