I was wondering if anyone has noticed a increase in standard DVD playback quality using the VGA cable as opposed to the component.

Yes.

Component: 480p
VGA: 1080p (well I do)

VGA will scale you DVD to whatever video setting you set it to on the 360 dashboard.

is there any good reason for this it cant be because of copy protection because you can play HD DVD's just fine and who would copy a upscaled DVD when they can copy a HD DVD as long as the movie is on it

it seames like M$ turned it off on purpose for component

It is not up to M$ to decide to turn off upscaling over component. Against the law but VGA does not fall into that law. You can look it up. I'm not too sure about the specifics.

against the law to upscale but not to play natively?

no wonder people hate the USA they make stupid laws like this crap and they try to force the rest of the world to do the same thing they just cripple everything I hate this country

Its not a law out of congress but was a standard set by some DVD people but they didn't think of VGA lol so M$ went with VGA.

But the US does some stupid things sometimes though.

HOLY COW i cant believe people still ask this.

It depends on which tv you have but.

If you have a HLS samsung dlp its night and day. Makes your regular dvd's look HD. The cable would be worth it if it cost $300 dollars. Of course your tv might not even accpet the signal through vga.

It's obviously a conspiracy that reaches to the highest echelons of our government to limit our TV resolution while using one set of cables and not another. For what evil purpose, I do not know, nor do I wish to think about, lest I lay awake at nights worrying about why they would not want me to watch Pretty Woman upscaled over component.

Thanks for the responses, allow me to elaborate. At present my 360 is outputing standard def DVD at 480p and my Sanyo Z5 and 37" Viewsonic LCD are upconverting to 720p. With the VGA cable it is the 360 that will be upconverting to 720p (I assume that will look better than choosing 1080i as 720 are my native resolutions). Doesn't this just end up as a battle of which is the better processing chip? I have read that it is allways better to have the player do the scaling. True or false? Which brings me to my next question, how does the 360 processor stand up to the better dvd players like OPPO or anything with a Farudja chip in it.

Thanks for your thoughts

Scaling - just as good
Deinterlacing and 3:2 processing - not quite as good
Colors - FUBAR

I have both Oppo and Samsung Faroudjia HD931 player. Xbox360 blows both of the players away. The remote response and movie playback is much smoother on the 360 than on my Oppo & Sammy players. All hooked up to Sony 46XBR3 LCD.

well from what I understand the scaler chip in the 360 can scale up to 2048x4096 threre isnt a display available to the consumer but there are some 4K projectors could someone in the future hack the 360 to display the full 2048x4096?

like they did for the XBOX 1 and it can now upscale DVD's to 720p 1080i dont work so well since the XBOX 1 is not so fast and low in mem
