Cool, Is it a HDTV channel? Is BBC world a 24/7 News channel, or is it like BBC America where its just English programming?

It is a 24 hour news channel which in my opinion is the best International news channel ever! I believe they carry documentaries as well that are related to international news.

Agreed. It is good news that it is coming to FiOS. It will be nice to have a British perspective on world events.

BBC World is a 4:3 channel, though it contains a LOT of 16:9 SD material carried as a 14:9 letterbox.

It is the BBC's equivalent to CNN International - though it carries slightly more feature programming that is factual rather than news related in some back half-hours - and this feature programming differs in the different regions it is broadcast in. (I don't think motoring show Top Gear is carried on the North American feed, as this show airs on BBC America?)

In the UK late evenings (around 2300/0000 GMT) it often has news segments co-anchored from London and Washington slightly more tailored for a US audience (some of them are carried by PBS stations I believe), whilst in the UK mornings it has a more European angle, for a European breakfast audience.

At 1200 and 2000 GMT it carries some high-profile hour long news shows. The 1200 is presented by George Alagiah - a high profile UK reporter who also anchors the BBC One Six O'Clock News, whilst the 2000 show is called "The World" (or was) and is simulcast on the BBC Four domestic channel, carrying much longer and more in-depth films, and is a bit more "high brow", and has a very different on-screen look to the other channels.

From 0100-0500 GMT the front half-hour news bulletins are co-produced with BBC News 24 (the domestic 24 hour news service) - and these bulletins have a slightly higher concentration of UK News.

The back half hour programmes include a good technology show "Click" (formerly "Click Online"), a travel show "Fast Track", a very well regarded half-hour interview show called "Hardtalk", and a number of editions of "World Business Report", as well as other shows.
It isn't HD - it isn't even distributed in 16:9 SD...

Most of the BBC AM programming is awful.
Wish we could more live news shows on that channel too.

FYI sneals Top Gear is aired from time to time on one of the Discovery channels in the US. haven't seen it for a while though. never seen any tech-themed shows on BBC America.

Ah - if it airs in Discovery that would explain it not airing on the North American BBC World feed. (The trails on BBC World for it usually say "Except North America" on them)

I'm not surprised BBC America doesn't air tech shows - it is more "daytime" leisure and lifestyle, drama and comedy oriented AIUI.

The BBC doesn't have a huge number of science and technology shows any more - and those that it does make are probably co-pros with a US broadcaster (BBC Horizon worked closely with PBS Nova for a long time) Click on BBC World is a notable exception.

Is it the same news as the 1/2 hour BBC World News that airs on PBS stations at various times during the day? I don't regularly watch it now (just when there is major international news happening) but if it were 24/7 I'd might tune in more often.

Maybe this will mean that other channels, like NASA TV, will be added too.

RIP. I will not shed a tear. The American episodes were sterilized for political correctness, they lacked a good deal of sarcasm and bluntness of original show. They also were significantly shorter and included ads, while original show runs for a whole hour nonstop, no ads. Seems that after doing several castrations of original episodes, Discovery guys realized that they would have to cut about everything to bring the show to American higher standards of sterile, dull and stupid, so they gave up.

I hope that now when Discovery stopped the nonsense, BBC America will pick up the fallen torch and will air unabridged Top Gear including all the jokes and all the European cars too, does not matter that these cars are not sold in U.S. C'mon BBC, if you do it, I will sign up for the channel. Oh, and please do it in widescreen, upconverted WS PAL will work for me.
