I'm going to be ordering and building my panels. The 2" mineral wool is about half the cost of the 703. My panels will have a frame and a wood back.
Is the 703 that much better than the mineral wool to justify spending twice the $?

They're similar acoustically, but mineral wool is floppy and more difficult to work with, and it tends to sag and get lumpy over time. If you're building a sturdy frame and have a way to support the mineral wool you'll probably be okay. A few commercial products use mineral wool in a frame. But it'd be more difficult to make a stand-alone fabric-wrapped panel using it.

I would avoid putting a solid wood back on the panel. Even as a first reflection point it is good to have a airspace between the wall and the panel.

What about cutting the mineral wool into right triangles that are 2'x2' on the sides and stacking them in corners of the room?

Glenn,
I've been looking into building my own, because neither your standard colors nor your custom colors are what I'm looking for. (I'm looking for something similar to the gray Auralex Sonosuedes) Do you have "custom custom" fabrics available that might work?

That sounds like a good use of this material. :)
