I'm looking into setting up my first OTA for HD on the roof of my 2 story house. I'm living out in Easton PA which is about 80 miles west of NY. I'd really love to be able to get NY network broadcasts so I can watch the NY football teams in HD and save my money by not paying for Directv's NFL Sunday Ticket and the NFL Superfan. For what those subscriptions cost me per year, I'd be more then willing to invest in a high end antenna to do what I need to do. I checked antennaweb for my zip (18045) and unfortunately it shows only Philadelphia stations. Is that it? Am I done? What else can I do to get NY broadcasts 80miles away?

What you need to do is go back to antennaweb and click on options and enter in the height like 200ft. I am 70 miles from chicago market and the antennaweb said I could not get it and I have a CM 4228 & CM 7777 and I get 5,7,9,11,20,26,32,38 and 50 all in DT. My antenna is inside 2nd floor apartment with pato door facing south and it also said I should get Milwaukee station 50 miles, but it was hard where my antenna sits at . Heck I was able to get Chicago with my homemade 2 bay antenna just like a DB2 antenna and I didn't hook it up to the CM 7777 pre amp but it helps with the CM 7777 hookup too. Don't give up too quickly not every setup is the same. But the best place is the ouside roof or a tower mount.

Thanks for the encouraging response. I guess the best way is to find out what equipment should give me the best chance for success and then make sure I buy from a place with a liberal return policy. If anyone else has similar experiences or other ideas, please let me know. Thanks.

Plugging an antenna height of 2000' for your zip code shows that the NYC broadcast towers on the Empire state building are 67 miles from the center of your zip code. So you are under 80 miles away.

However, while you are south of the NJ highlands proper, you have some rather hilly terrain around you and between you and NYC. Are you located on a hilltop or higher elevation? The digital broadcasts for the NYC network station are currently on UHF channels. This will change in 2009 after the analog shutdown as at least 1 station will be switching it's digital broadcast back to upper VHF.

But for now, you need a long range UHF antenna - either the Channel Master 4228 or the AntennasDirect 91XG combined with a rotator and pre-amp. If you get the UHF antenna and want to be prepared for 2009 when a number of stations will switch their digital broadcast to upper VHF 7 to 13, leave room on the mounting last to add a upper UHF antenna. Your odds are better if your house is at a higher elevation, but if you are willing to try it, get the 91XG or Cm 4228 and put it up on the highest part of the roof. The 91XG has the advantage of smaller wind load and lower weight which makes it easier to mount. Just be prepared for none of this to successfully pick up the NYC stations.

My brother uses the XG91 and he picks up the NYC ,Philly and Allentown Stations in DIGITAL from FORKS township in Easton....I would take a chance at spending $90..Let us know what antenna you get and tell us how it works.Think you only want a UHF antenna.....JT
