Hi. I had a tough time with my HD reception tonight. Some of the HD stations blinked in and out; there were a lot of dropouts. Reception was not as good as it usually is. Why does HD reception fluctuate like this?

Anything can drop out HD reception just like anything can interfere with analog FM. Cause are weather, sunspots and magnetic storms, computers interference and airplanes flying overhead.

I would be curious if you noticed that analog FM reception was a problem for you during the period of time you were having problems with HD.

Yes, to answer your question, FM reception and HD reception go hand in hand; when FM reception is not very good, HD reception suffers too.

HD radio is touchy when it comes to listening on a receiver. The stream is either received well or it's not. It is not like analog (standard FM) where if the signal isn't received very well you can still listen to it in most cases. Of course, weather can intefere with standard FM as well. Ever try to listen to your favorite station only to find that you are getting a different station several hundred miles away?

This isn't just HD radio that suffers this. Digital satellite TV services are the same way compared to analog TV.

There are police and fire services that are adopting digital radio for their communications. They suffer from the same issues where if they are in a certain spot they can not hear their telecommunicators or other officers.

dead of night,
This goes without saying, but it sounds like your HD reception is kind of on the edge. It wouldn't be a bad idea to install a directional FM antenna in your attic or roof/tower. This would give you more stations and better reliability with HD streams.

Thanks but I'm not a handyman and I'm afraid of heights. Can I get someone to install one for me? If so, how?

I'm beginning to wonder if sometimes HD signals go down for technical reasons. Right now, two HD stations are down in my area at the same time.

Chances are it might be the same ownership or it's the same transmitter broadcasting others. I know for example with shortwave there's a transmitter that has canada, vietnam, south korea and sweden from it...

also if you check hdradio.com it might have some of the same ownership....
