well im about to upgrade my dss system to a four room system. i see allot of bad reviews about the hd dvr that direct tv has out now. are these old reviews or are these things crap? i would prefer to have the hd dvr but not if the dvr is poo poo. im willing to just get the hd only receiver and add tivo if that would be better. what are your suggestions?

I have two of he new DirecTV HD DVRs and have had no problems. I also have a pair of HD TiVos which still serve as great machines for OTA and the MPEG-2 D* channels.
Thdere were a lot of problems initially, but from what I can tell they are becoming a little more rare these days.
The PQ on the new machines is a step (or two) above the Hd TiVos, by the way -- from OTA and fromDirecTV's MPEG-2 offerings.

I agree - very few problems from day one, better picture than my old HD Tivos, user interface is better in some cases and worse in others. Overall -- the box works very well for me. I have only had one problem and that happened when the box's memory was full.

There's still only 3 pickup's on it but can see 5 satellite slots (99/101/103/110/119) and is bigger then the phase 3. There are still only four outputs from the dish which would go to a new Ka/Ku switch if you need more then that.
If you want info on the HR20 visit the sister site, www.dbstalk.com, the latest info can be found over there.
BTW: I have two HR20's and they've been fairly good, only the very occasional problem with them.

thanks rad, anyone have a slingbox or have comments about it?
I know I've seen a thread about it, either at DBStalk or www.satelliteguys.us, I forget which one. Sorry.

I heard nothing but bad reviews on here and other web-sites but have had NO problems with mine and the newest updates seemed to have cured MANY of the major problems that people did have.
My suggestion: Get the D* DVR
