Is 2x4 logic used with Linacoustic (and other similar products)? By that I mean is 1" thick product really 3/4th inch thick?
Thanks!

View Full Version : Dumb ?: How thick is 1" Linacoustic? mbgonzomd 01-27-07, 11:44 AM Is 2x4 logic used with Linacoustic (and other similar products)? By that I mean is 1" thick product really 3/4th inch thick? Thanks! ChrisWiggles 01-27-07, 03:09 PM not 2x4 logic, it's actually 1 inch thick. This is actually annoying when you're using wood with 2x4 logic as the frames. BIGmouthinDC 01-27-07, 04:07 PM Yup it's 1 inch. Now if you've been hanging around here as long as I have, or as my wife would say "If you'd get off that damn computer the basement would be done" you would realize that the real question isn't how thick is the 1 inch linacoustic, but rather "do I really need to use 1 inch furring strips?". There is plenty of evidence that the answer to that is maybe yes or maybe no. I've seen some pretty great work on a theater that used stock 1x2s which are only 3/4 thick ( http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=767522) and I used DIY 1 inch. Both can work. mbgonzomd 01-27-07, 08:01 PM Big, does the linacoustic just get compressed a tad with the 3/4th inch furring strips? Or is there some trick to it that I am missing? ChrisWiggles 01-27-07, 09:08 PM I haven't worked with linacoustic specifically, but the oc703/705 or similar type boards won't compress much. You can compress them to a degree with your hands but they are pretty springy and dont give very much, and won't compress with just fabric stretched over them. BIGmouthinDC 01-27-07, 10:15 PM GONZO: First a lot of the furring strips get covered with trim molding. And where it doesn't the GOM gently compresses the Linacoustic and it gently slopes back to the full inch a few inches into the panel. I would recommend doing 1 panel and making sure you like the look before hanging the rest of the 3/4 inch furring. On the theater I linked (CurtisG), you would have to look very closely to even tell. It might make a difference depending on lighting sources and color of fabric that's why if you think you are going to use the readily available 3/4 stock you check it in your application. Don_Kellogg 01-28-07, 01:21 AM If you use 1" furring Strips or Fabric Mate 1" track you will be fine. I even used 3/4 MDF for backing where the chair would go no issues there either. chinaclipper 01-28-07, 11:52 PM Big, does the linacoustic just get compressed a tad with the 3/4th inch furring strips? Or is there some trick to it that I am missing? Gonzo: I am also planning using Linacoustic in my HT. I plan on using 1" furring strips made by ripping a 2x6 board into 1"x 1 3/4" strips. I will set the blade at 1", that should give me 1" thick (depth-wise) strips by 1 3/4" (width-wise) strips, right? I am assuming that a standard high grade table saw can handle this chore. It's not my saw, it's someones' here at work. BTW, you and I seem to be at similar stages of building, n'est pas? Tom Chinaclipper Chinaclipper, I think your strips will be 1 x 1.5" (not that it really matters). Once again, using 2x4 logic, a 2x6 is 1.5" x 5.5" (I think :o ). As far as ripping the 2x6's you should be fine with a decent table saw. 2 pieces of advice: 1) get a good blade, designed for ripping. It makes a world of difference. 2) If you have a second set of hands it makes ripping a lot easier. Or set up some sort of rig to hold the cut ends of the wood as you push them through. I will not even mention how I get around this problem, as I am sure I will get chastized :D I am sure you will beat me to the finish, everyone around here does  chinaclipper 01-29-07, 02:47 PM Chinaclipper, I think your strips will be 1 x 1.5" (not that it really matters). Hehehe I started my HT more than 7 months ago, and that does NOT include the 5 months research time! No kidding. Whoever said this thing is an obsession was pretty close! Anyway, best wishes, Tom Chinaclipper jikkjack 01-29-07, 03:30 PM Guys - check out the local home depot or lowes. I found 5/4" corner boards in 8 foot lengths for $4.50 each. Rip them in half and you will have a true 1" x 1.75" furring strip. My 2 pennies.
