Sound Of music. Oh God, I owned this on VHS, then, VHS with Hi-Fi audio, then DVD, then THX special edition DVD.

Looks like I am grabbing a PS3 soon. I thought I will wait till Casino Royale as I just recently got HD-DVD player. But I already ended up pre-ordering Open Season! Maybe I will grab PS3 as soon as I find one in our local BB.

I'm in for Sound of Music and Holy Grail, also. Has Sound of Music had a proper restoration/re-master? The master used for the SD DVD wasn't that impressive as I recall.

(Sure wish Fox would announce Moulin Rouge, or the Alien films, well 1&2 anyway...wouldn't mind Last of The Mohicans, as well.)

By coincidence all of those are in the walmart $5.49 DVD bin. Why pay $30+ for these weak titles. I want blocklbusters like Aliens, Alien, Spiderman, The Abyss, Titanic, The Matrix, Blade Runner, Blade, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Star Wars I-VI, Sin City, The Incredibles, Robots etc. etc. etc.. Sometimes I wonder if people just get movies because they are in High Def and there is nothing else available. Wake me up when there is some real good stuff out.

At this rate that is what the price of HDs will be soon. You can get some at 12.88 and 15.99 already. Im sure the neutral studios are gonna love the idea of there Hi Def DVDs ending up in the bargain bin shortly after the launch of their format.

Good point, I never thought of it that way. There is no way Disney or Fox would go with a format that is already slashing its prices in a desperate attempt to get sales.

I think Sound of Music is possibly the biggest title in that list, perhaps even announced. It could be a very handy wife-tamer for some HT guys! I was talking to a woman recently who had never even seen Star Wars even though hubby had tried to persuade her. As a test I asked her about the sound of music and her reply was "OMG!!! I *love* that movie!!"

There are also a lot of people who'd buy a PS3 for Python alone! Personally I'd get "Office Space" as soon as it's available! I might even get Vinny, loved Tomei in that and Fred Gwynne was excellent

Bravo Sony :)

Not a Frank Capra fan I guess? No, it isn't widescreen, and it is B&W, but the resolution of a 35mm film even then would make use of HD over DVD.

Anyway, that's the only one in that whole list with those "weaknesses". The Sound of Music should look spectacular. I'm much more excited to see that than the rendered CGI of Matrix Revolutions being slightly sharper.

As to something like Office Space, I love that movie, but it doesn't exactly sell the HD format to me.

Actually, it would be 1440x1080 resolution (as it should be), but who's counting? :p

I'm glad to see some older titles coming. There is room for them as well as the recent titles. However, I will find it funny if anybody who mocked Universal for releasing "Animal House" or Warner for releasing "Caddyshack" is going to turn around and praise Sony for releasing "Monty Python and the Holy Grail." :)

When this list is up for pre-order I am most definitely getting Sound of Music, Mr Smith and Wall Street. In fact, I have posted a couple of times now that my pre-order list at Amazon includes over 3x as many BD titles as HD DVD. This is AFTER I just added Bullitt, The Game and Payback to my HD DVD pre-order list.

I am not morally opposed to BD in any way, and just like you am expressing my preference. In the end, we're better off because of either or both formats. Both get the job done (from what I have seen so far).

However, I do admit that emotionally I do have a soft corner for HD DVD for a couple of reasons. First they started of as the huge underdog and have made a mighty fight to be where they are. In the office (or with clients), I bring this up all the time :) and Second, is supporting US intellectual property. A small payback for the Japanese who will not touch a US product that is competitive with their own industry!

Clearly, I don't go to their extent since I buy Japanese hardware all the time, but intellectual property (IP) seems to be the last bastion of competitive advantage that the US has. Living in DC, you gotta support the home team :D

I'll be a little sad if HD DVD loses, but it's not like I will not buy BD. I already have!

Wall Street :
Greed is, for lack of a better word, Good. A classic line in a classy movie. Wall Street I thought was the first movie that really exercised Mike Douglas' talents. Who remembers him from the Streets of San Francisco days?

Sound of Music :
I have been disappointed with the various transfers I've seen of this movie so far. The colors are usually muted and the music just didn't come out strong enough as they do on CDs. I wonder if this will be a careful digital remaster this time? I don't want the colors here to look like Transporter 2 or CSI:Miami, but I am hoping they try to make the colors just a little bit more vivid.

My Cousin Vinny:
Many talk about Joe Pesci performance . This movie for me is about Marisa Tomei. Did she get a stronger role than this? I can't remember any. This is the best comedy courtroom drama I can think of. Based on this movie alone, Ms Tomei is a Goddess. :) I can't recall seeing her in any role of substance after this.

Office Space:
This movie is too close to reality to be funny. I can recognize so many characters when I used to live in cubicles that it is downright scary.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail:
A good enough piece of british comedy. For me, the pinnacle of British comedy is still Life of Brian. There is nothing created so far that achieves that level of high comedy. The holy hand grenade of antioch is a classic item that even gets references in the unix games like ultrarogue, hack, omega. We just know there is a cult following for the Holy Grail. I'll take it, but I also want Life of Brian.

I don't follow that. Where is the big US IP advantage in HD DVD?

The two main SoCs (Broadcom and Sigma Designs) are format neutral. The same audio and video codecs are in both formats.

Toshiba is a huge Japanese CE. Onkyo is a respected Japanese CE. Meridian is British. And the Chinese are Chinese.

Plaz,

Thank you for admitting you are biased in favor of HD-DVD. That is perfectly fine. The part I do not understand is where you essentially say you support HD-DVD because you support America. Isn't a large part of HD-DVD's surviveability going to be based on Hardware made by the Chinese, using essentially slave labor? HD-DVD is no more "American" then Blu-ray.
