I thought I remember hearing once that FCC rules prohibit cable providers from encrypting the major network HD channels anyway. Does anyone know whether this is true?

Well....legal or not, I see them filtering them out all the time. ;)

if you have an internal QAM tuner you should be able to watch the game in HD for FREE.

the network HD channels are supposed to be passed on unencrypted. (they are in my market, comcast is the provider)

however i have heard a rare occasion where this is not the case.

If this is against the law (as is often suggested on this forum), I'd like to see an exact citation.

As cable companies move to switched video - which requires 2-way communication between the set and the line - clear QAM will be decreasingly useful. Fortunately, OTA HD penetration is likely to increase as time goes by. - DR

Brighthouse Networks in central Florida encrypts most of the HD stuff. Unless you want to watch spanish channels then its not.

I agree. Let's see what the law says & force the cable companies to comply. I have Brighthouse (a division of Time Warner, I believe) and they encrypt the HD network signals.

I'm unfortunately paying my cable provider almost $100 a month (for only analog basic and broadband). They're not giving me the Superbowl in HD for free. They're being paid a King's ransom for it. (and I get all the HD locals unencrypted with my QAM tuner)

I upgraded to the basic HD package for free here, the only requirement was to already have any digital cable package and a HDTV... Time Warner cable here...
so you might be able to do the same with your cable company... all they did was change the cable box.
