View Full Version : 1292 streaking, MP mod now available?
Hello guys,
a friend of mine has a chance to buy a near mint 1292.
he had a look at it, but it has terrible streaking.
I read it here, that Mike was analyzing the problem
and might have a solution.
was there ever a fix ?
Thanks
Michael

Nope. No fix at this point in time.
Mike is not actively working on the 1292 at this point either from what I understand, though he has indicated that it's "on the radar" for the future (timeline unknown).

Kal I thought the fix was done. I just read this from MP on your site yesterday.
Quote from MP
Someone voluteered to send me a set of boards to finish this project up with, but I'd rather have my own. That way I won't get into trouble if I somehow was not able to get around to it.
Also, another person had promised me a full set of 1292 boards. And this guy is just one super person, and with him, there won't be any strings attached. So we should be back on course, and since I've solved the problem, it'll just be finding the time to wrap things up.
And when that happens, I'll probably will be asking Curt to
take over 1292's for me. I know he don't like doing mods, but I'm hoping he'll take this on for the sake of the CRT community
I missed that one. Interesting.
Though I always like to play it safe: That is, until products/services are available to purchase, they don't exist.

Fireball72 01-29-07, 07:32 PM Hello,
one question: since when the mod was announced? And when will it be available?
Axel
dokworm 01-29-07, 08:05 PM I think Mike had to take the fork back out that he had stuck in it.
As far as I know the problem was never actually solved and no mod ever came to light.
I could be wrong though.
Nothing's been announced. Nothing is ready. Pay no attention to Mike... :)

pcCinema 01-29-07, 08:27 PM To say that he is apparently overwhelmed already might be a huge understatement. If you simply look in the recent posts for one titled "ATTN: Mike Parker" you will get a better understanding he clearly has things going on which are getting in the way of this and other projects.
If I were you I'd advise my friend to pass on the 1292 with problems, as who knows how long it will be if it's fixed, if ever. Sometimes things come down to priorities and while I can't tell you what his priorities are clearly there are choices to me made.
(Not trying to stab at MP, I know what it's like to be overwhelmed myself, just trying to open someones eyes to the reality of the situation.)
Buy something that works perfectly right now as is. There are plenty of opportunities out there that nobody has to buy a fixer.

Why not, the digital guys sell vaporware daily!

Thanks
Oliver Klohs 01-30-07, 01:41 AM Nidi,
we had this discussion and kind of thread before and it is probably the thread theme responsible for the highest number of closed threads in the CRT forum history.
As others have said before I think things can be wrapped up nicely by saying that as long as you cannot buy the mod it does not exist for practical purposes.
As there has been talk about the matter for years (first in 2003 I think). It is my personal belief that is is VERY unwise to buy a 1292 that needs fixing to be watchable, so better stay clear from heavily streaking 1292's.
Oliver
dokworm 01-30-07, 03:15 AM I think the above translates into there is no fix and there is not likely to be one for the foreseeable future, so if the streaking bugs you I'd get a different projector - or you may be living with the streaking for a very very long time,
mp20748 01-30-07, 04:26 AM I agree with all that's being said here. And I'm so appreciative of the tone and the way this has been handled.
From time to time, I would post without really thinking something through, and in this case, that's what I did on the other forum.
I don't want to say anymore on this than what's been already said in this thread. I'll juts follow the lead and stay with it not existing if it does not exist.
thanks guys!

I broke from my busy schedule and worked on the 1292 early this morning. Before I left my shop, I was able to see a totally STREAK FREE image on that 1292. Initailly, the streaking on this projector was very bad, but it's now non existing.
It's been a very long time since I've had any experience with a 1292. I don't remember them having so much noise in the video chain. Once that noise was ALSO lowered, the projector has a very sharp/punchy image. I was able to run very high scan rates using my RGB test pattern generator. I also ran a CD test pattern. Everything looked good.
I'll do some more testing later, and will post back the final results in a coulple of days. And at that time I'll post my intent to provide this upgrade/fix/mod. There's 4 boards/modules involved for a total picture upgrade.

So you donīt have a mod? Because you wrote you have it, but want to copy-protect the circuit? Thatīs what I remember...

I've been saying for a long time that I know what causes the streaking, and I know how to make it go away. However, the fix is not simple, and the time to get back to the 1292 to work with some of the later solutions that I now have has not happened, and will not happen anytime soon.
So, since there's not a fix in place, there's nothing to discuss.
So at this point, the fix does not exist!
draganm 01-30-07, 12:30 PM If I was in MP's shoes and had any 1292's in my shop I would be heavilly inclined to douse them with gasoline and light them on fire (assuming they didn't belong to someone else) :D I can't think of anyone who has taken more grief over an issue than this one.
At this one point I would be regretting taking on a project that sony abandoned before they even abandoned CRT's altogether. It seems like a tremendous amount of time and energy for a machine they quit making 10 years ago and is not a very common model to begin with.
It also sounds like it would be easier to just build a new neck-card the way Moome builds the DVI modules than rectify the problems with the old ones?
