View Full Version : Do I need digital/optical for 2.1?

Hi.

I just bought a pair of bookshelves + sub.

Getting everything set up, and I am wondering if I need to get optical cables to get the full 2.1 effect, or if analog connections will do the job? Tried searching the answer to no avail. I know I need optical for full 5.1 when I eventually go that way, but not sure if I need it right now.

Thanks!

Do you really mean 2.1 or just 2.0? Because for 2.1 (which is very rare) you do need digital connections. Otherwise no.

I do mean 2.1. I bought some Athena bookshelves and the BIC H-100.

Thanks for the response!

I would use the digital connection (optical or coax) in order to calibrate volume levels, time alignment and bass management in your receiver. That stuff is still important for 2.1 set-ups. You can use the analogue connections, but that will entail additional analogue-to-digital and digital-to-analogue steps unnecessarily.

I would also recommend going with the Optical/Coax cabling, in addition to the benefits mentioned above my experience has shown it cuts down significantly on rf-noise.
