View Full Version : Content Buying Habbits
I was curious about everyones buying habits.
Do you go out and buy ANY new release, even if its a horrible flick?(You know, ooo its hi def, I need to get it)
Now that I have both a PS3 and the HDDVD add on I find myself much more picky. I just cant bring myself to buy an "ishtar" kind of movie just because it went exclusive on one of the formats, or has a special extra, etc. etc.
What about PQ if its a movie you like, but its getting killed in reviews over PQ?
Perfect example is Fifth Element. I'm a Sci Fi geek, like the movie, but everyone says I should steer clear because of the PQ.
Ahhh this poor noobs head is spinning!
studiotan 01-28-07, 02:38 AM HD has got me hooked. I'm definately buying way more movies I never would have dreamed of getting on SD DVD just because they are HD. Scooby Doo is a good example :p When I heard how good the picture was I had to order it. HD makes so many movies more enjoyable to sit through for me.
I'm also a special features junky, I love learning about the process of making movies, so I justify buying some movies I probably won't watch more than once knowing I'll have the special features. It's one of the things that's kept me away from BD, to be honest. I would buy marginal titles like Fantastic Four if they had any kind of decent extras.
I still stay away from movies I know I won't enjoy, even just as eye candy, but I'm up to over 70 HD DVDs at this point and the only movie I reget buying was House Of Wax. Horrible movie and it didn't even look all that great.
BTBuck1 01-28-07, 03:13 AM I personally can't wait for this weinner to come to High Def

Same here. I thought I had kicked the buying habit thanks to stopping DVD purchasing when I got DTheater in late 2002 (not enough of those to mean much). But, I'm right back at it.
I have a pile of a dozen to watch right now. :o

firefighter81 01-28-07, 10:40 AM I've bought more HD movies in Q4 2006 and this first month of 2007 than all the DVD movies I bought from 2003-2006 combined. I love HD!
At first I was buying HD titles just because they were HD, but now I'm a bit more particular. These days, I will rarely buy blind, so now I'll only buy If I'm interested the movie.

HPforMe 01-28-07, 02:17 PM I did when I had the Tosh A1 only. Up to 60 titles now. With the PS3 I'm more particular. Ihave abput 14 titles for blu ray but both formats have several titles coming which will be must buys - Scarface, Lawrence of Arabia, Dances with Wolves...
AnthonyP 01-28-07, 02:20 PM A bit of both. DVD has become harder to watch swo I am growing my collection in HD. But the way it works is I go to the store and just look arou8nd and buy what I feal like at the time and how much I want to spend
I must be either in the minority or the "silent majority"...
I've bought 4 titles since getting my HD-A1 a few weeks back. Now that I have Netflix set-up with HD DVD, I won't be purchasing many more HD discs. They are just too expensive. For catalog titles like "The Thing" I just can't justify the 2.5x premium for HD. I'm still buying catalog titles on SD DVD. With new titles I might be inclined to buy HD since there is less of a price gap, but there haven't been any new titles recently that I've felt compelled to own.
ahh I see.. I thought at first glance someone was content with how much they paid for their Hobbits...

Yea I hear that. But, I figured prices wont come down for a long time, so I wll buy the ones I really want. Scarface, Pirates, etc.
Previously I was purchasing most discs that I could get my hands on. Now I gave myself an HD budget not because I have to but just to keep things from getting out of hand.
My budget is this, 10 movies per month.
At the begining of each month I place my orders for all 10 movies whether there already realeased or scheduled for release that month.
Movie selection is based on whether or not I like to movie enough that I can picture myself watching it more then once.
My second set of criteria is the movies PQ reviews. Even if I like the movie it does me nothing if I'm not getting a better picture then I already have, I want to see a noticable difference. I consider the reviews at highdefdigest and anything above 4 stars - 4 being average - 4.5 good picture, 5 HD Quality.
(Hopefully this site can get more reviews up before the films release date)
BTW the above is based towards both formats and at least for Jan and looks like it for Feb too I will be getting most for BR just because of the slim pickings from HD lately.
For neutral discs I will purchase the HD version mainly because I get more for my money whether its extras, TrueHD and/or a combo side that will also play in my dvd player.
My collection at this point
HD DVD: 67
Blu-ray: 35 with 3 still on pre-order

This is where I have so much internal debate regarding the PQ. If Pirates,Matrix, etc. have bad PQ, what a bummer, because I love those movies. Also, how bad is bad PQ? subjective no?

Absouletly, everyones opinions will differ on PQ.
As I said first I decide on if I like the movie or not and if I do then I check out the reviews for it. I've found highdefdigest gives most movies to high of ratings, almost everything is 4 stars and above. So generally (so far at least) I've found when hes rated a movie at 4 stars I can expect an average quality, 4.5 stars pretty good quality, and 5 stars being reference quality but again this is only my opinion, I most likely will get the movie anyway if I like it, except if I hear they really fudged it.
I will only buy movies I REALLY think I will watch more than 1 time - or that represent good movies to watch when guests are over. Other than that - rent for me.
I've bought a few movies I wouldn't normaly buy on SD. But of those movies I've found them to be much better then I thought.
I bought corpse bride just for PQ and found it was a lot better then I thought very good infact. The PQ was much better then I thought as well
Anamorphiac 01-29-07, 02:02 PM 1) I make sure I want the flick...have a probability of repeated viewings (good extras can help with the repeated viewing probability for me)
2) I check out reviews and make sure the disc has a good transfer, etc…
3) I weigh the possibilities of a future re-release with better extras...if I think that might happen, I will wait (I DESPISE the current studio "soak the consumer" release practice standard release...then special edition...then collector's edition...then ultimate edition...then extreme edition...etc...) When I buy now, they are not getting me to "double dip" later (i.e. on SD DVD - T2, Bond releases/box sets, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Silence of the Lambs, etc...) When I finally buy, I will stick with that version.
4) For HD DVD titles, I am starting with purchases of only flicks I want that I have not previously purchased.
5) I will consider upgrading from a SD DVD if I get a PQ upgrade AND extras I do not have already (i.e. not getting Casablanca because I bought the 2-disc special edition...but I did buy HD DVD Willy Wonka and Blazing Saddles because I bought the first releases SD DVD's and did not upgrade when they gave them the special edition treatment on SD DVD...so I am getting all the extras I do not have with a great picture upgrade.)
6) If the buying of content described above slows and I have disposable income, I will then look at upgrading favorites if the PQ difference is significant (titles such as Apollo 13 will be considered then…however, from what I have read, discs such as American Werewolf in London do not offer significant improvement.)
Oh, and basically I have quit buying SD DVD except for maybe a few TV season series to complete a collection when they are released (that probably won't show up on HD anyway.)

Yup, Rosie is kinda hot, whats her rate these days? :p

I am fairly selective. I tend to buy HD-DVD movies that I plan on watching more than once. Sometimes I might gamble with a new release that I have never seen that gets great reviews or movies recommended by friends/family thathave similar tastes.
I will probably have around 20-30 HD-DVD's by the end of 07...
I was buying anything just to have more HD content in the beginning but recently I've been pickier as to not have a collection of crap.

Ugh, another spelling Nazi :D
I buy pending on a few things.
1) If its a movie I really have to own becauase its a good movie.
2) If its a new release and not a catalog title it helps. Like I bought Superman Returns, but not Superman the movie
3) PQ helps a lot. Sometimes I do want to sit there and just be amazed at how pretty something looks.
4) If its Blu-Ray it needs to be BD50 or at LEAST BD25 with VC1.
5) PRICE!!! I was thinking about buying crank at suncoast the other day when I was passing through, but they had it at msrp of about $40. I couldn't bring myself to pay that much for the movie. I actually can't see spending more then $20 for it so I'll probably rent it until I can get it cheap.

Yea, what is it with Suncoast? Do people actually buy stuff there? Thye dont make me want to buy HD stuff LOL
tracemhunter 01-31-07, 09:46 PM The things I look for before I pick up a new Blu-ray movie:
1) Is it something that I will actually watch more than once? I could care less about extras or interactivity. I just want something that I can watch every now and then and enjoy.
2) What is coming out next week. I am a broke-ass college student and can only afford so many movies
3) What is the PQ like?
