View Full Version : HD Tuner built in but can't figure it out
vash1025 01-28-07, 07:17 AM my TC-32LX60 has a built in HD Tuner it says you don't need to buy any other stuff to get HD channels from it but I can't figure out how to use it and the instruction manual doesn't help any. Anyone able to help me with this?
Thanks in advance
If you have cableTV, plug the coax cable from the wall into the deginated input connnector in the back. Set for "cable" and perform a channel scan/search.
If you don't have cable, plug an antenna in the designated input connect in the back. Set to "air/antenna" and perform a channel scan/search.
Strange... usually manuals are pretty descriptive for cable/antenna connections and setup.
Ratman's comments are spot on. Assuming you are able to receive your local over the air signals, the tuner should find the channels when scanning. It takes a couple minutes because it will go through all available channel slots.
Hey Ratman, I'm originally from Westmont, HTHS Class of 73. Good to see someone from Collingswood.

Digital sets are "stupid" when they first come out of the box. They need to be "taught" a few things. Sets that can do both OTA and CATV need to be "taught" even more.
So, you have to tell the set a couple of things, like "where you live" (for setting it's clock and doing EPG), and you have to tell it that you have it connected properly to a source, and what that source is, then let it go out and "find" all of the available channels.
If it also has CATV capability, you have to "tell" it what kind of Cable channelization format you have, and whether you have QAM (Digital Cable). Then, you have to let it "find" all of those channels.
STBs also require "knowing" the screen format, and the display rates of the monitor they are connected to.
It's all so different from the "plug 'n' play" analog world. And, it's no wonder we see so many sets getting returned to the stores.

Hi ex-neighbor!
I'm originally from Blackwood. Moved to Colls in '78.
I downloaded the manual for the TC-32LX60 because i have the predecessor TC-32LX50 which doesn't have a built-in digital tuner and I was curious to see how the digital tuner works. (I use a external digital tuner with my set.)
vash1025, when you turned on the set for the first time, it should have automatically led you through the "First Time Setup" procedure described on page 9 of the manual. Did you do this? Did it pick up any channels at all? I note that at the very end you have to press the "OK" button in order for the set to actually remember the channels it found in the channel scan.
Are you using cable or antenna? Did you have another TV hooked up to it before, so you know it works?

I am a 32LX60 owner as well. The SHeeT is in the manual. I'd like to throw a couple of insults at you for not knowing how to do a simple auto scan for digital (HD) channels, but here's the low-down.
Press MENU
Press DOWN ARROW twice
Press ENTER
There should be a button that should state "Auto-Scan," or something to that effect. Press enter on that.
You can try to pick up free HD from either your antenna or from your cable company (*AND NO YOU DON'T HAVE TO NECCESARILY SUBSCRIBE TO YOUR CABLE CO.'S HD TIER TO GET THESE CHANNEL'S USING YOUR TV'S BUILT IN TUNER. YOUR TV HAS WHAT IS CALLED A QAM TUNER, WHICH ALLOWS YOU TO PICK UP FREE HD CHANNELS IF YOU CABLE CO. DOESN'T SEND IT ENCRYPTED).
Try the cable scan first, and if you get no digital channels, then try the antenna. For cable, do not connect the cable to your cable box first. Connect the cable directly to the back of the TV. Most importantly, make sure you set to so that it scans for "ALL" channels (meaning analog+digital) and ****NOT**** for "ANALOG" only
If you are wondering "what's the difference between analog and digital channels", the short laymen super-dumbed-downed answer is that digital channels tend to come in crystal clear (or close to it). Analog signals tend to produce a not-so-clean image on HD sets.
Despite my bitterness (its the frustrations of a sales associates dealing with customers who don't understand what I just told you, that is, about getting free HD with an antenna), please let us know how it works out. Also, before posting again, try to read up on the forum if you have questions about antennas.
MomentaryLapse 01-29-07, 04:59 AM Sorry to hijack this thread, but my father just bought himself a nice Panny plasma with a digi tuner built in. He is receiving HD/Digital for "free" via Comcast... however, is there channel lineup listed somewhere? It's not the same as Comcasts. He has channels such as 125-4 etc instead of just having 173 on up being HD programming. TIA
mjones73 01-29-07, 07:07 AM Best bet is to check the local reception info forum here for a thread for your father's viewing area to see if anyone else was able to map out the QAM channels... be warned with QAM, the channel location can vary from tuner to tuner.

Thanks so much Jones... didn't even know it was called "QAM" so searching was impossible :)
mjones73 01-29-07, 08:36 AM No problem, your father's set probably has a QAM and an ATSC tuner in it. QAM is used by cable, ATSC is for OTA digital reception via an antenna.
