[QUOTE=footballforever]anyone know about this set? Is it a good buy?
also curious how this compare's with the panasonic PT-52LCX66 which had the same price last week. tia
TasteThaGumbo 01-29-07, 09:16 AM ^^I'm curious also, any help?
Jeremy Tebo 02-01-07, 02:03 PM Add me to one of the curious. I went and looked at that Panasonic last week, it was OK but not too impressive. Sitting next to the Sony E2000 it didn't stack up too well.
So does anyone know much about this Hitachi? Very little info on it here or elsewhere. Might have to go check it out.
haknslash 02-01-07, 02:16 PM I might be getting this TV tonight as it is one of the two choices in my thread I created today http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=798457.
If I do indeed do get it, I will report back with "out of the box" opinions and opinions after dialing in the settings.
and yeah there is little to hardly any real info on this set. The only place I ran acroos a discussion thread about it was a canadian based site http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=41454&page=7. There is hardly any useful info in there besides a few people mistaking glare reflections with screen issues. Some do have valid points though...
Rob052067 02-01-07, 05:05 PM Price is low, but most of the similar Hitachi models (55VS69, 62VS69) are ranked near the bottom in the latest issue of Consumer Reports. User ratings on Circuit City's website are good.
haknslash 02-02-07, 12:44 AM Well I for one love my new set. HD is clear and sharp as can be at 12' where I sit.
webmiller 02-02-07, 02:58 PM I've had one for over a month now and find it quite nice especially considering it only cost $999.
However, I'm trying to determine is if there is a way to defeat SVM (edge enhancement). I know how to get into the service menu (menu+menu+8+select with TV on), but I don't see anything that appears to deal with SVM. Currently watch it with the sharpness turned way down in the 15-20 range and the picture is VERY good. The SVM rears it's head when the set displays something like the Colts bright white pants with bright blue stripes from considerable distance.
Steve S 02-02-07, 10:25 PM Velocity Scan modulation is a method of artificially sharpenning the picture on a crt based set by making the electron beam that sweeps the surface of the crt linger just a bit longer on bright parts of the picture than it does on darker parts.
Since your set is a fixed pixel display with no crts with electron beams to regulate it is impossible for it to have any VSM at all.
This is not to say that it has no other edge enhancement feature, just that whatever it has is not VSM so don't look for it in the user of service menu.
webmiller 02-04-07, 10:06 AM Thanks for the clarification on the technical definition of SVM. I know that the prior version of this LCD RP (50V500) had some sort of edge enhancement as it was in the user menu. For whatever reason the newest sets don't have a user adjustable setting anymore. Knowing the default for the 50V500 was 'HIGH', I am guessing that its jacked up on the newer sets as well. I'm starting to think it's been incorporated into the 'sharpness' control. I really wish they were independent of one another.
hi, anyone used this display before I currently considering it.
stosh1982 03-08-07, 01:36 PM me too...
I have one, got it in December, on the rack at CC it was next to the Sammy and a toshiba, I wanted the sammy but the wife liked the pic on the hitachi better so we got that one. Its turned out very nice, my OTA channels are very clear and it found them easily enough. The picture is probably like most HDTV's ...amazing on certain things and so-so on others. So far I like it alot and dont know that the sammy would have been any better.
d4rkf1ber 03-17-07, 04:37 PM I got one a few days ago at CC for $849, amazing deal. I was not looking at Hitachis at all, in fact I had made up my mind to get either a Toshiba or Samsung and was hunting for the best deal. Ended up walking into CC and next to the samsung was this Hitachi and to be honest I was first blown away by the picture. It looked so much nicer and brighter then the samsung. I do know now that it probably was just a setting issue but regardless I was impressed with the TV's picture. And then when I saw the price I about passed at. :-)
Ran home and quickly googled the model and started reading about it. I was a little dismayed about everything saying it had only 1 hdmi port because I knew I wanted to go HDMI from my cable box and HDMI from the upconvert DVD player I was planning to buy.
Then I found the tv listed on CC website and started reading all the reviews. That sealed the deal for me because many many people had nothing but positive things to say.
Don't get me wrong its not the best tv, its not the worst either. I believe it is better then some more expensive tv's, and for the price I don't think anything even comes close to touching it.
Coming from 32" CRT non HD tv to this thing with HD cable is simply amazing. Like everyone else says the best way to show it off has to be Discovery HD channel. You can't watch that channel with having your jaw drop. :-)
Overall I highly recommend this TV. Long term experience with it I don't have yet. But personally I feel that paying $849 for it gives me lots of room for dealing with any problems. I have a two year warranty from CC on it so anything goes wrong it should be taken care of. And I can extend the warrant another two years at any point before it expires.
Also at this price I wouldn't mind if anything too bad happens with it, its not all that more expensive then a good HD CRT or something. It was a cheap way for me to get a nice HD TV for the time being while the market stablizes. With the intro of 1080P its very hard to decide what to buy. Do you spend a pretty big chunk of money now to get a nice 1080P or save some money and get a 720P but then do you get DLP or Plasma? Its all freaking nuts right now, everyone and their mothers makes something and the technology is changing just as quickly as computers so anything you buy is practically out dated when you walk out the store.
I was making myself sick trying to decide. This TV has made me happy both with the technology and the viewing pleasure, and even more importantly the price. Now I can wait for the market and technology to hopefully stablize a bit and in a couple of years I might even be ready to buy a new set for the living room and then move this set to the master bedroom.
Long post I know, but just thought I would share my experience. Oh and yes I did get a cheap $90 RCA upconvert HDMI DVD player / recorder from walmart and it seems to work great on playing DVD's in some what of HD.
orangezen 08-25-07, 12:25 PM We purchased a 50vs69a last December on sale at Sears for $1000.
We've been very, very pleased with what we got for the $ we paid. Standard def cable is not the greatest picture, but I think that's got more to do with what's being piped in than with the TV. Watching hi def cable is one hell of a pleasure, however. Not only is the picture quality super sharp, but the the colors are really brilliant as well. Standard DVDs are good on our set, though not quite up to high def in quality. The anti-reflective screen is really nice to have, especially after watching my brother's big screen TV while he closed blinds and then hung blankets over the blinds as well, trying to cut down on the reflection. Sometimes when we're watching scenes with a very light or white background, we can see a bit of a screen-door effect, but it's never been anything distracting or extremely noticable.
For the $ we paid, we couldn't be more pleased with what we got and would certainly buy the same unit again.
