In my new media room, I will have Key Digital's 1080p Digital Video Processor. I have to get a new DVD player, (kids broke the last two). I was considering an Oppo upscaling DVD, but is it a waste with the upconverting software in the Key Digital?
If so, any recommendations on a good cheap DVD player?

Last year Oppo introduced a model targeted specifically at outboard processors: the DV-970HD (http://www.oppodigital.com/dv970hd/dv970hd.html).
I don't have one, but lots of others here do. There are several active threads on this forum. This (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=682896) seems to be the main one.

Unless it's a very old VP, I don't see how the upconvertor in the DVD player can compare. If you use the Oppo's upscaler, then to some degree you are simply using the Key Digital as a switcher.
Sounds like a current VP. So I'd focus on a DVD player with good core video ouput. Since most DVD players nowadays seem to come with the integrated upscaler, you might look to an older one which got great reviews for core video, and which is reduced in price because it's not current.
On the other hand, how much cheaper can you get than an Oppo? And an older DVD player might not have HDMI output, for connectivity with the VP. And perhaps part of the reason the Oppo is good is because it has good core video as well as a quality upscaler.
No answer. Just thoughts.

Agreed... Oppo specifically designed the 970 to meet the need of those who wanted a DVD player that output 480i over HDMI, leaving all the processing to the VP. There are other players which can also output 480i over a digital connection but I believe the Oppo holds it's own PQ-wise and at a MUCH better price.

oppo 971HD it is!!
970, not 971. The 970 is the only Oppo player with 480i over HDMI.

Unless it's been fixed in somewhat recent firmware, at 480i the 970 has the ICP error (see Secrets of Hometheater for decscription - I think it's there). Many video processors and deinterlacers can correctly "filter out" this error. Just about every DVD player has this problem to some extent so if the Key Digital doesn't filter it, there's not much you can do (except get a video processor that does filter it).

If they've all got it, it's not really a decision variable, is it?

From what I understand, there's varying degrees of the problem, but I'm not sure if it's pre or post filtering. If' it's pre-filtering, it may depend on how well his video processor handles a certain player may determine which player to get.
