View Full Version : When did you stop buying DVD's?

When did you make a concious effort to stop buying DVD's or curtail your spending in anticipation of Blu-ray?

Personally speaking I haven't really bought any DVD's for about 3 years or so, mainly down to an increase in renting but I also decided not to buy something I was going to replace anyway. Admitedly BD launched about 12-18months later than I'd expected, but I have certainly missed out on some sweet deals because I saw it as money down the drain.

The final option should read "2004 or earlier"

After I got used to watching blu-ray on my PS3... then tried to watch Lord of the Rings on regular dvd, a movie which is usually extremely visually impressive on dvd, and couldnt due to its lack of depth/sharpness. I wont even watch SD movies anymore, let alone buy them.

Last DVD I bought was Crash. I dont like to double dip so I only buy on Blu-Ray now and if the movie doesn't come out then too bad.

I stopped buying at retail price years ago. Now I pick up movies from time to time when they are $4-$10.

January 05 to May 05

With D-VHS D-Theater tapes, OTA HD broadcast, 20 channels HD via Dish Network and PBS HD via DVB-S - I just lost ALL interest in SD programing. I knew that at some point there would be a BD player added to the equipment rack so I just saved to purchase BD software.

I still love buying DVD's! You can't honestly believe that TV shows like the Simpsons are going to show up on Blu-Ray anytime soon...if ever. Plenty of good stuff left to get, although I highly prefer HD versions.

Because of D-Theater D-VHS I stopped buying in 2003. Mostly recorded HD content.

I still buy TVonDVD sets, obscure Horror/Sci-Fi flicks, and practically any good deal I can find, which is usually $3-5 each at Blockbuster or EB/Gamestop type stores with a wide variety of used titles. I've become slightly more cautious lately on popular catalog titles that I think may be announced for HD in the next year or two.

Conversely, I also buy VHS and LaserDisc if it's a title I think will struggle for even a standard def DVD release for quite some time.

I think to say you'll never buy another DVD again, is just plain silly. You're depriving yourself of so many titles that will never be available on HD. By this logic you will be stuck with only New Release Blockbusters and Popular Catalog titles.

This is not to say I haven't slowed down my SD buying. Actually, I've probably only bought a handful of titles over the last few years. But Im still a sucker for the $5 Walmart bin and just today I purchased Nirvana: Live! Tonight! Sold Out! and Bottle Rocket for 3.99.

I doubt either of these will EVER by available on Next gen discs. And especially at that price.

Exactly, you'd have to be a fool to completely stop buying SD DVD's. Like you said, there's plenty that will never see a release in HD.

I still buy DVD's but very little an no movies, just series that are in promotion and that were filmed in video anyway.

Stopped back in Late 05. There were still a few titles I had to have, but I think I only picked up maybe 10 titles since late 05 till today. In comparison I had over 500 titles from '00-'05. I don't think I'll ever buy another DVD film. I'll either rent and wait for HD, or buy the HD version on day and date releases. TV shows are the only item I'm still getting on DVD.

I still buy DVD's because I have to. Some titles probably won't make either HD format for quite a while, like the newly released Little Miss Sunshine.

I just ordered a DVD yesterday, The Devil Wears Prada, for the wife.

the reason?
I know it's out (or coming out) on Blu-ray in the US, but there's no signs in the UK, and if it has region coding on it then it won't work on my player, so I'd have to wait until someone tested it on a non-US player to see if I could buy it, and that takes a while

Well,

Last DVD I bought was packaged with a CD and that was November. I did return some un-open-ed DVDs that were X-Mass gifts and used the money to buy Blu Ray discs. I don't ever want to buy a DVD again that's for sure but,....

There is a lot of stuff available on DVD. I know certain things I may buy are in the works (a few concert films) and I think I will snap those up as soon as they are available.

-Brian

p.s. Laserdisc buying is way over for me and there's isn't a single VHS tape on the premisis. (Though there's plenty of cassettes..)

Certain films will either never be on the high def formats, or will take years to get there. So I still buy some DVD's.

It's true that some DVD's may never be released in HD. However I guess I'd take a wait and see attitude. It's not like there's nothing coming out in the meantime!

For the most part, I stopped getting them fairly close to my crossover to HD.

However, there are still lots of titles that probably aren't coming to either HD format for quite awhile. Masters of Horror for example, or all the little independants. Or even if they are coming, they're so cheap it's hard to resist (Iron Man), especially if they have pack-in bonuses.

So I can't really vote in this poll.

I don't think it's silly. Many people have their reasons as to why they've stop buying.

My biggest is:

Space - 2,800 DVDs take up a lot of room. You can't own everything that you see.

Titles that will never be available on HD - That's what NF/BB is for.

Now, I'm still like a deal like the next guy, but you have to call it quits at some point. $3.99 for a title is nice, but I guess after owning so many, I have to weigh in the fact of how many times it'll be viewed before purchase.

If a favorite title is only available on DVD and is likely to remain that way, why should I not buy it? To make room on my shelf for DOOM, THE BENCHWARMERS or another high def "winner" ? ;)

I still buy DVD's, but only stuff that I find in the bargain bin that I wanted to see but never got around to. Case in point: The Ali G Movie. $5 at Wal-Mart, and I couldn't rent it that cheap.

Right now I only buy DVD's that I can't get on Blu-Ray.
I'll probably stop buying DVD's alltogether when they come out with a 1080p HD-DVD player that works as seamlessly as my PS3 does.

even though I only got my bd player in november, i still buy normal dvds, especially foreign films. i watch a lot of korean, chinese, japanese, and occasionally european movies, and it'll be a LONG while before they switch over to the HD format. I guess the only exception to that rule is Kung Fu Hustle, and Curse of the Golden Flower due in March.

Funny how you'd name two movies that I'll assume are not your favorite, but fail to mention the fav that you want to pick up?

Anyway, of course make room in your collection for a favorite.. I don't 'like' all of the movies I own as favorites, but with the huge used market out there, I will say I will never 'buy' a new release (with cash). I'll just trade for a newer (but used) copy of said movie.

I'm about ready to drop 99% of my film based dvds onto the used market. I'll keep rare stuff and TV sets that I probably wouldn't upgrade.

I stopped buying DVD's as HD DVD's (and then BD's) began to grow in number.

Only thing I bought on DVD recently was Prison Break, Justice League, and other tv sets I thought were a long time in coming. Then I read Prison Break was coming to Fox BD and I cursed Fox. CUUUURSE YOOOOU!

I find myself waiting for releases to come out on HD DVD or BD now.
