I thought I remembered this movie being announced for a blu-ray disc awhile back for February 13th, but as of yet it is not available for pre-order on any websites that I've checked out. Does anyone know if this was cancelled, or is this just another case of Amazon being very late to add a title?

As far as I know, the status of this movie remains the same. It will be great movie to showcase Blu-Ray though. I don't think of it much movie wise but the costumes, set, and soundtrack were great.

You are incorrect. This Blu-ray title has been cancelled for now - not delayed, but cancelled.

Sure ...in order for that to be true, Sony will NEVER release Maria Antoinette on Blu-Ray ever. You are also incorrect ...its either on schedule or delayed. I went back and check the announced specs of the disc. Its slated to be encoded in mpeg2. My theory is Sony decided not to use mpeg2 but do it in AVC mpeg4 ...same as Open Season and Casino Royale ...thus the delay.

Apparently MA did bomb in the box office, but then so did Casanova and even that title got a BD50 45Mbps peak bitrate VC1 treatment.

I can't see why it is cancelled, only a few of the deluge of BD releases this month can be classified as smash hits.

Perhaps there is some technical reason to remaster or reencode it. It's not after all, a valuable title, certainly not one of the big guns that will be held back until there are millions of BD players around (like Casino Royale).

There is a trailer for this title on the Stranger than Fiction BD.

The PQ in the trailer is terrible. Very soft.

This terrible PQ might well explain a decision to rethink plans to release this title if it can't be made to look any better than the trailer.

Have it on DVD. The PQ is shite. To say it looks soft and grainy would be putting it mildly.

Sofia Coppola is also either expecting or a recent mom. Perhaps her participation at this point was not possible and Sony decided to hold off. Just a thought.

My theory is, they were too busy DOING Casino Royale and the many others on the slate, and Marie Antoinette just wasn't important enough. And since it missed the day-and-date DVD release, they figured they might as well not even bother with an ETA until they've put out all the important movies, or they have enough production strength to do it cheaply.

You're acting as if you think HD formats are going to end up like SACD and DVD-A. They aren't going to be a niche market forever; HD is the future.

Great soundtrack, but I was bored to tears w/this movie. Lots of posturing & style, but hardly any substance.

It was a panny %ss treatment of the subject. No head rolling, no mistreatment of the children while being held in custody in Paris, nothing about their Paris experience - it was a major piece of fluff. Deserves a 1/2 star out of five - for the costumes and visuals.

Was this really released on BD in Korea? One peak at the film's first trailer, which is available at 1080P from Apple's Quicktime Movie Trailer page, clearly shows this flick looks amazing in HD. I sure hope it doesn't get lost as a contender in upcoming Blu-ray releases. Anyone have any good news?

It's not as bad as that. The first half is pretty good but then it loses focus. The second half of the movie is mostly butlers walking in and announcing historical facts to cross off the checklist:

"Your Majesty, the peasants are starving."

"Your Majesty, the peasants are revolting."

"Your Majesty, the peasants are headed for the palace. You must leave."

Yawn. Too much telling and not enough showing but I still liked the movie enough to purchase. You're right about the terrific period detail and costuming. And for those interested, IIRC you get a gorgeous full backside view of KD sans clothing early in the movie but nothing else.

I feel that many times we forget that movies are a story and not always meant to be taken as historical documentation even though the subject matter is based in reality.

Marie Antoinette was more than an enjoyable movie IMHO, and I am looking forward to picking it up on Blu Ray. The picture on dvd was very good to me and the feel of the movie was one I liked a lot, including the music. I'm eagerly awaiting this one myself. I don't need every movie dealing with fact to be all about the facts.

It is coming out as part of a Sophia Coppola 4-disc set in France this May:

Don't know if it is locked to Region 2 or not tho.

I'm hoping to catch a review in advance to find out if there are forced French subtitles, though.

Hey. I also ADORE Marie Antoinette (Sofia Coppola version) and would DIE to get it on Blu-Ray. HOWEVER, on that fact, I and others have called Sony DIRECTLY successfully and have gotten through to a real live person, several times. All they do is ask you for your name, phone number, et cetera, and then you just request that Marie Antoinette be released on Blu-Ray, and they pass on your request. But just be sure to specify it's the Coppola one. Anyway, I am hoping we could FINALLY get it in Fall 2011?? I have the phone number and e-mail; just reply back. And pass this on to other fans, lol. Thanks a lot! Have a nice day!

My copy of the French Sofia Coppola Collection boxed set is due to arrive from Amazon.fr tomorrow. There's no way I'm opening it until I find out of there are forced French subtitles. For the member that was curious, it is Region-Locked, but I've modded my player to be Region-Free.

Can anyone recommend (French or English language) websites were I might find reviews of French titles?

Also says it's region free, but I don't know how much faith I'd put in that.

Well damn. Forced subs *and* region-free. Sadly, I'll be returning this.

Hi. :D HUGE fan of Marie Antoinette. Anyway, the reason I am replying is that I was wondering just how much the entire package cost in U.S. dollars? That is AWESOME that it is region-free, but I don't want subtitles. :/ I just wish that Sony would finally release Marie Antoinette in in U.S...........anyhow, I tried doing a Euro to U.S. Currency converter online, and it didn't work. Answer much appreciated. :D

And as a sidenote, how good is the quality as compared to the U.S. DVD release (of Marie Antoinette)? Thank you. :D The DVD is just too grainy for my taste. Ugh.
