The Video: Sizing Up the Picture

My only real caveat is some slight but noticeable edge enhancement. Thin halos are present throughout, and there is more stair-stepping than I'm used to seeing in high-def. For example, in the opening scene there is a moving POV shot across a carpet with a hard-edge pattern, where jagged edges are clearly visible. This is the only drawback to a transfer that otherwise would have earned a five-star rating.

If Crank is a 4.5 for PQ, then what in the world is 5?

Wow, talk about finding the smallest nitpicks in order to not give it a 5.0 for PQ.

Well, any amount of noticeable edge enhancement and aliasing is not to be taken lightly. I haven't seen this transfer because I think the movie sucks, but I'll trust Peter's word on this one.

The Covenant, Open Season... :)

Anything with visible edge enhancement is not 5/5 by definition. 5/5 means free of visible digital artifacts.

I still don't get The Covenant being anywhere close to a 5...

I don't understand how a movie with better PQ then King Kong or Hulk gets a 4.5 from HDD. I noticed that Crank got perfect scores everywhere else though.

To my eyes, Crank is the new standard to judge all other HD optical media against.

DVDTalk gave it a 4.5 as well. Their review is consistent with Peter's, in that they mention excessive post-processing done to the image.

There is no way a transfer with edge enhancement artifacts should be considered as the best reference material. Well maybe if you're a Sony employee, or shill, and we're talking about a Blu-Ray exclusive like Crank.

Crank was shot with a variety of different cameras and lots of post processing was done to the image to make it look the way it does. The things that they are talking about were there in the theatrical presentation as well as I noticed them at my local cinema. Personally I am not going to fault a presentation that has something like EE or aliasing in it intentionally.

Only in a Blu-ray forum, in a Blu ray thread, about a beautiful Pq Blu ray movie, with all posts by Blu ray afficianados appreciating the PQ, would he choose to turn to HD DVD bashing!!!

It's unreal...predicatable, but unreal

Yeah yet he overlooks the smallest nitpicks on HDDVD and say's "Ahh F*&^ it" and gives Hulk a 5 (which is deserving mind you) but so is Crank IMHO.

Although, in Hulk, he said "I just can't find a single thing to complain about with this presentation.", and his "But f%^k it, I will give it five stars -- " was because "I'm sure someone will email me, complaining that I missed that one dead pixel in frame 38,394.", not because he was excusing any faults he found

Just for the record

thats pretty good considering it was tested on a 8foot wide screen. on a typical 60inch screen its EE can't really be seen.

Even I saw some artifacts on the Hulk HD DVD........I find it hard to believe that a reviewer couldn't see them. Although Hulk has a very good transfer, I don't think it can live up to other totally pristine transfers like King Kong.........I really want to see Crank on Blu Ray now, just to compare.

Can someone tell me if Crank is codefree? In Germany the ditrubutor is Universum and as far I know they only do HD DVD and I have heard nothing of a release anytime soon. Help would be greatly appreciated.

I don't care what any reviewer say's, Crank is a 5 star picture end of story, and this is coming from a HD DVD fan boy. You cannot knock the incredible picture quality of Crank, the movie is horrific but who cares.

Says a person, who in the grain poll, voted that all HD transfers shouldn't have grain. I knew you had voted that way after seeing your comment here, but I got verification. :)

Crank is a 5/5 in my book, but perhaps my 50" screen isn't big enough to see the .5 issues...

Oh come on... Crank is very sharp, but there is plenty of EE, which is really crap.
This is really no King Kong...
And I own both HD-DVDs and Blu-rays, and I don't give a f*** about the format war :)

There is indeed plenty of EE in Crank. However, the best parts of Crank (the swimming pool scene, most of the material with Amy Smart) are to my eyes far superior in PQ to anything in KK, and even superior to Hulk, which to me is much more impressive in PQ than KK.

I gotta say... after watching Reign of Fire I think it may take the cake for audio demo material.... it sounds incredible.

I also thought there was excessive edge enhancement in Crank, similar to there being excessive grain/noise in Miami Vice HD DVD. They may have been intentional, but both detracted from overall PQ. I was puzzled as to why Crank BD PQ was so highly touted, so thanks for confirming my initial opinion.
