View Full Version : should i wait? ccheng187 01-29-07, 04:33 AM Thinking about buy a tv now but hear new samsung 07 model is due anytime,so was feature in the new model? LED? bfdtv 01-29-07, 06:26 AM See the 2007 Samsung DLP Information From CES (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=779782) thread. If anyone in your family notices rainbows on DLP, then there is definitely reason to wait. ccheng187 01-30-07, 11:54 AM oK,they said "slim LED"is that the plasma version of dlps? bfdtv 01-30-07, 12:07 PM oK,they said "slim LED"is that the plasma version of dlps? No, LED backlighting is an alternative to the traditional color wheel used in past DLPs. The use of LED backlighting eliminates the RBE (rainbow effect) seen by many in displays that use a color wheel. The use of LED also reduces display startup times from 15-20 seconds to 5-10 seconds. ccheng187 01-30-07, 01:10 PM I see, well at this time is there any version of slim hdtv? Other than that i dont really see any difference. This is what i add up. 1. no rainbows(dont know if is efective to me) 2. 20,000 vs 6,000 life(2 extra light bulb, maybe $500 bucks and itll last forever no big deal) 3. hdmi 1.3 (not important to me,dont know what that is i guess) and also LED use different light engine is that means no bulbs is involve? Can the light be replace by users? ccheng187 02-01-07, 03:14 AM ????? bruce banner 02-01-07, 03:33 AM No, LED backlighting is an alternative to the traditional color wheel used in past DLPs. I read that people who are sensitive to rainbows may see them on LEDs as well. something about how LEDs switches colors, even though fast.. some people may still see rainbows. Is this true? electric turd 02-01-07, 06:29 AM I read that people who are sensitive to rainbows may see them on LEDs as well. something about how LEDs switches colors, even though fast.. some people may still see rainbows. Is this true? Ive heard the same thing, I read somewhere that a rep from samsung said that using leds is almost equal to using a 20,000 rpm wheel vs a 14,000 rpm wheel. davegow 02-01-07, 08:45 AM I...20,000 vs 6,000 life(2 extra light bulb, maybe $500 bucks and itll last forever no big deal) ...and also LED use different light engine is that means no bulbs is involve? Can the light be replace by users? I was really interested in this technology when it was first announced, but from reading owner's reports, looking at more detailed specs and finally getting to see one in a store I am less impressed. The one I saw had only so-so PQ compared to other sets near it getting the same feed, and had severe image deterioration at a side viewing angle. Also, I agree that the economics of LED bulb life don't look that good. I've seen reports that the replacement of the LEDs requires a $1500 light engine replacement. (If anyone has other info, please respond). But if that happens at 20,000 hours, it would be cheaper to buy the three or four $200 lamps that regular RP sets would need over that time. To your last question, regular lamps on RP sets are easy to replace. If you can replace a regular light bulb and have a small phillips screwdriver, it's no big deal. There's instructions in your owner's manual and with the replacement lamp. It's a good idea to buy a spare lamp ahead of time if you can afford it. |
