Hi,

I need some help to buy the right DVD player…
I just installed my brand new SANYO PLV-Z5 this week-end, and I quickly bought a LG DN191H at BestBuy to make some trials, with the idea to return it later…
BUT: I’m French, and I have a lot of PAL/Zone 2 DVDs
I tried to put the LG in free zone, but the hacks I found don’t work
So what I need:
1- a DVD player with HDMI
2- a DVD player easy to hack to play both PAL/Zone2 and NTSC/Zone1 DVDs
3- and finally a good PQ

Is the OPPO 970 can be changed into Zone “0”? Please let me know

Thanks

Hi, French_Guy
I highly recommend Denon's wonderful universal player DVD 3910.
In USA it's on big clearance now, as DENON tries to push it out, to make room for it's upgraded replacement, DVD 3930.
So you can buy it now for around $600, maybe less on ebay (original price was $1500).
And it's worth every dime of it :D

Not only that it has great PQ (which you can upconvert to 1080i), but SQ is oustanding (great DACs inside)!!! And it plays DVD-As and SACDs, which I listen to all the time.
It's an NTSC/PAL player, and ... yes, the hack for Multi-Region works great (you don't need any hack software for that, just clicking on couple buttons on your remote)
Trust me, I have few PAL/Region 2 films myself.

Good luck with your quest !

P.S. the proper terminology for DVD "zones" is "REGIONS". I mention it only to avoid confusion on this forum - because Denon (and other manufacturers) use ZONE 2, ZONE 3 etc. terminology for their receivers' functionality, and it means completely different thing... ;)

All the Oppos can be made region-free and will play PAL disks.

The 981 has better PAL playback than the 970.

The Philips 5960 can be made region-free, has very good PAL handling, and is both cheap and widely available.

The other players mentioned will likely have better PQ, though one forum member with both a 5960 and Oppo 970 prefers the Philips for PAL disks. - DR

Hi,

The Denon 3910 is probably a good choice for PQ, but it's really too much expensive for me
Philips 5960 is a player I will try, but my concern is that is doesn't handle DTS...
Any other suggestions?

Thanks

The 5960 can handle DTS, it just needs the latest firmware. All those posts about not passing DTS were from months ago, and established a myth that will not die. - DR
