View Full Version : Blu-Ray vs Upconverted DVDs for Older Movies
gspin2k1 01-29-07, 10:49 AM Okay. So I have a PS3 as my Blu Ray Dvd Player, and a SD dvd player. I bought fifth element for blu ray expecting it to look spectacular, but realized it didn't turn out as good as I hoped it would. I assume because it's an older movie, and it ended up looking more like a movie that would be shown on TNTHD (which is still good, just not as good as newer movies on Blu Ray). Now it makes me wonder if I should bother replacing my current older dvds with the same movie on blu ray, or just watch them on an upconverting player as they may look exactly the same? So yeah my main question is..for older movies...such as Terminator 2, crouching tiger hidden dragon, Fifth Element...obviously there's a noticeable difference between blu ray and SD DVD...but how about the upconverted DVD vs BluRay? Thanks a bunch

I don't plan on replacing the majority of my DVDs. If a movie I really love is released on Blu-Ray with some compelling new bonuses or significantly better PQ; I may buy it again on BD --- but it's doubtful.
I'm pretty happy with my HDMI equipped DVD player and realize the BD looks better but can't justify the added expense when I already own the film.
Things I might be inclined to buy are the Pixar and Shrek films.
I'm also planning on not buying anymore current TV shows until the BD versions start coming out. These would include shows like Hereos and other things that look great in HD.

Purchase "The Searchers" by John Ford (starring John Wayne). Watch it and get back to me about older movies on BD! :D It was made in the 50's and has made me want more older movies NOW! IMHO it is a stunning transfer for its age... and it looks far better than many Hollywood offerings of today! Ford was a Cinematic genius.
Firstly, Sony has admitted that TFE is a sub-par release and top that end has commissioned a new transfer which will be available as a new release.
Secondly and more importantly I fully agree with what Ray Cathode has stated about The Searchers (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0049730/), which is a stellar example of the quality that is possible with older source, assuming the master and transfer is up to snuff.
If this is the norm then I for one will be replacing many of my catalog titles.
As a reference btw, I upscale my DVDs w/HTPC and ffdshow which means at the least that I'm willing to go the extra to achieve what I want.

IeraseU 01-29-07, 12:16 PM All of the older movies I've watched in high definition (Mutiny on the Bounty, Casablanca, Robin Hood, Gran Prix ) have looked *significantly* better then on DVD (including upconverting).
joenobody33 01-29-07, 01:55 PM I agree completely. I got my PS3 over the weekend and picked up "The Searchers" and the original Superman movie as my first BDs. I was extremely pleased and amazed with the quality of The Searchers. I can't wait for other old westerns and WWII films to come out on blueray. (sorry for the glare in the pic)

I have the Toshiba HD-XA2 which is supposed to be a rather good upconverting DVD player, and in my opinion it still can't deliver the picture quality of even the worst rated HD material like Hitch. Personally I have no regrets buying the movies I like in HD.
HiddenDepth 02-15-09, 08:34 PM most definitely BD!!
MickeyDora 02-15-09, 09:22 PM ^Is this a record for thread bumping?
