I'm trying to open up my horizons to different music. I just recently got into home audio. I currently listen to Pink Floyd, Radiohead, Cold Play, GNR, Tool and Iron Maiden. What other good bands would you recommend?

if you are looking for some surround choices (since this is the surround format) then you are going to have to limit your choices to what is available. Of the bands you mentioned, I believe Dark Side of the Moon would be your only choice for what you currently listen to. I would recommend a Porcupine Tree title or a Flaming Lips to get you started in surround with something close to the bands you have listed. There are many good titles out there, but unfortunately there are many more great titles that may never get a hi rez multi channel release.

Definitely Porcupine Tree. I'd start with Deadwing and work back, but they're all great.

How about progressive rock bands like The Police, Rush, Peter Gabriel-era Genesis, King Crimson, Emerson Lake & Palmer?

Black Crowes for modern classic rock

Newer hard rock acts such as Audioslave

As far as good surround sound discs, Porcupine Tree, Beatles "Love" come to mind...

If you really want expand your horizons, how about:

Holst
Mahler
Prokofiev
Dvorak

If it must be "Rock" then there is always Rachmaninov.

What's that? The classics not cool? Okay, how about some:

Sanborn
Baker
Basie

or the king of cool... Davis

There is a whole world of music out there to be discovered, more than you could ever digest in a lifetime. Don't be afraid, I have actually seen Metallica's Black album rest comfortably in my changer right next to Holst's Planets and Miles' Kind of Blue and never once did it smoke, quiver, quake, explode into a thousand pieces or melt down into a gooey blob of aluminum, steel and plastic. What is next, dogs and cats living together?

Happy exploring! :)

I'll second the nomination, but I think it is:

My apologies to young Master Rubinson if I overstepped with the plug. :o

If you're looking for high-resolution surround sound recommendations and you like Radiohead and Coldplay, I would highly recommend Beck's Sea Change SACD (I imagine the DVD-A is equally as good).

It's that rare example of a great record that becomes even greater thanks to a perfect 5.1 mix.

I would recommend a Porcupine Tree title or a Flaming Lips to get you started in surround with something close to the bands you have listed.

I'll add a second vote for The Flaming Lips (Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots) and add my voice to the chorus recommending Porcupine Tree.

Good for you! I just picked up the Godsmack SACD The Other Side . Fifteen dollars for seven tracks is a bit high and the surround aspect is nothing special, but if you like the lyrical talents of this band I'd recommend it. Track seven (Asleep) is chilling.

Yeah, I love Godsmack. :)

That would be very nice! I'm just waiting for 10,000 Days on vinyl. I've heard reports that the import version of 10,000 Days bests the US version.

Porcupine Tree is great and I just listened to Beck Sea Change DVD-A for the 100th time.
