First, I am extremly naive on this particular topic, So please keep that in mind. But I have seen several places upon searching that vaguely indicate that your normal standard definition TV picture (notDVDs) can be upgraded by running your signal through an upconverting DVD player. And I just want to know if this is at all true. If so this would indeed be some great news for me.

I've never seen a DVD player with inputs, although recorders must have them. Recorders don't get a lot of respect around here in terms of quality. A video processor will do what you want, but they are expensive: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/forumdisplay.php?s=&daysprune=&f=37

Your display (if a DLP, LCD, LCOS, or plasma) will automatically scale all inputs to its native resolution. Alternatively, there are (expensive) external scalers. No, DVD players do not scale anything other than the SD DVD it is playing.
