I have the LG DVB418 upconversion player. I has been working just fine for the past year. I recently bought an XBR2 LCD and wanted to try this player on it. After connecting the HDMI to the LCD I get the following problems:
- Greenish / reddish cast over the entire screen (reminds me of not connecting 1 of the component video connections. colors are messed up)
- Turning on the DVD player momentarily displays the "LG" manufacturer screen with a spinning DVD icon (in greenish /reddish tint) and after a few seconds the signal is lost and LCD goes blank.
- The above problem occurs at 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i. No difference.
- When connected using regular RCA video output, signal is OK.
I power on the LCD and set to HDMI output BEFORE turning on the DVD. Also, I used to have it connected to a Sharp LCD via HDMI and now the same problem is showing.
Can it be that the HDMI port is shot? Or is it more likely the HDMI cable is bad?
Anything I can try?

You've mentioned the two most likely scenarios.
Although, you said that you turned-on the HDMI output on the TV. I assume you meant the input?

A bad cable would not cause the uniform discoloration you see and probably not the HDMI chip. It's most likely something before the digital output stage. With RGB and YCbCr mix up you wouldn't see any image definition either. Give the player a stiff whack and see what happens. :)

Hehehe....haven't seen that advice for fixing an electronics problem before :) I am assuming you are serious. What can that "fix"?
When you say "before the digital output stage", what could that be? Any way to really fix that? Other then your aforementioned whacking :)

Yes, i meant input. thanks.
Try to turn on the DVD player first and then the TV to see if it recognizes the DVD player. Make sure you enable HDMI port in the DVD menu. Also it's possible with your updated LG DVB-531 firmware (to allow component upconversion on DVB-418), you've screwed up HDMI output?
Worst come to worst, the HDMI on the DVD player is bad. If this is so, upgrade your firmware (if not yet done) to LG DVB-531 to allow component upconversion and run the player at 1080i component into your LCD panel which should also look great.

Thanks for the reply. The menu doesn't have any option to enable HDMI Port. I have not updated the firmware from LG DVB-531. I didn't know it was even possible. There are no issues with doing this? And where can i get the firmware update for LG DVB-531?

I scoured the net for the file. All the links are now dead :( Would you happen to have the firmware still? If so, could you please send to : anubus12@yahoo? Thanks.
