Sony DVP-NS75H vs DVP-NS55P

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I was all set to go with the NS55P, which is PS player (no upconversion), but I realized the price difference between this player and the NS75H is only $30. I know upconversion DVD players are mostly useless since the scalers in many TV's are just fine, but I'm wondering if non-upconverted (480p) PQ will be improved with the upconverting player because of the HDMI output or its superior electronics?

There are 2 factors: 1) which has the better scaler, the player or the display (usually, it's the player), and 2) HDMI allows you to send a digital signal over the cable, rather than having to do a D-to-A conversion for component cables, followed by an A-to-D reconversion by the display. Most people notice an improvement with an upscaling player, but it depends on your spcific equipment. The only way to know for sure is to give it a try.

BillP,

Thanks for your reply. I have a Samsung LN-S4051 LCD. Any idea on the quality of the scaler? I will be buying via mailorder to so returning it is possible although certainly not preferable.
