View Full Version : Do all the Oppos have black border around the screen?

I was reading that the older Oppos had a small black border around the pic (i.e the picture did not fill up the whole screen or that some oversan was necessary to avoid seeing the black bar). Is this fixed on the newer models.

Please let me know.

My 971 shows a small amount of underscan: about 5 pixels on the left and 10
on the right at 720p on a 1080 screen. The 981 at 1080p shows none.

Most players using the mediatek chipset for scaling - this includes the Oppo 970, but not the 971 - will compress the picture vertically a bit at upconverted resolutions. Some (such as the Sony) do some post-processing to compensate, others have decided that this softens the picture too much. - DR

Can you check if there is any underscan at 1080i or 720p? Thanks!

Ok, did that: same results. The Oppo 981 shows no underscan or overscan at 720p, 1080i or 1080p when displayed on my Westinghouse LVM-37w3 using HDMI.

I do not mean to pick on your TV, but how do you know that you TV does not have any built in overscan?

What about the 970 does it also have a black border?

My Panny PM50 is the underscan king, not many players or anything unless set to 480p will show shifts, bar's,scrolling lines...etc.
I tried a 971 once and it had no problems "filling" the screen.

Nope

The DV-970HD will have vertical compression at 720p and 1080i. This compression error is not shown on all displays, as displays have different overscan rates.

The OPDV971H and the DV-981HD suffer from minor underscanning (several pixels around the entire picture). For most displays this underscanning will not be visable, as most displays have an overscan between 2~3%. Some displays, such as projectors or LCD displays will have little to no overscan, which is why you will see faint lines around the entire picture.

Looking at the Alignment/Overscan screen of the GetGray calibration disk, I see the entire pattern. Overscan would clip the image. I see no dark pixels on any border, so no underscan.

Hey Bill, from reading your posts in this thread it appears you have both the 981HD and the 970HD oppo players? Would you say that the 981HD is the way to go with the Westinghouse LVM-37w3 via HDMI? I ask because we're thinking about getting this Westy monitor and if we do, I'm thinking that the 981HD would definitely be the better oppo for this Westy model since its native resolution is 1080P

Your thoughts please, thanks.

I have the 971 and 981, but have never had a chance to demo the 970, although I have wanted to.

I have the LVM-37w3 and the 981 is an excellent fit. Plug and play, no problems. Well-mastered discs show fine images. 1080p seems to be 1:1 pixel mapping.

Use a calibration disc to get the most out it, but that's true for every player and display.

Good to know. But I'm not sure why you have the want to demo the 970. Because I would think with the 981HD able to output 1080p that seems to be 1:1 pixel mapping on the Westy LVM-37w3, which if true would indeed be an "excellent fit", why you would even consider the 970 that's not capable of 1080p output.

How would I know the quality of the player until I try it? Is the difference night and day, or something less dramatic? I also want to try it out on other displays in my circle of friends.

Something the 970 has that none of the other Oppos do is the ability to output 480i over HDMI. This would be a good way to test the deinterlacing ability of a display.

The common wisdom is that the 981 is "smoother, more film-like" while the 970 is "sharper, but with rougher deinterlacing." I'd like to see the difference.

OK, testing 1, 2, 3, I see. But other than testing this 480i over HDMI, are you thinking that this 480i mode could possibly display a better looking picture than the 981 does in 1080p mode on the Westy LVM-37w3 1080p monitor?

Do you prefer this "smoother, more film-like" picture of the 981?

Sorry, I have an inquiring mind. I've never seen the 970 so I can't positively say which I would prefer, but setting aside the pedantic equivocations: I'm actually sure the 981 is the best for any 1080p LCD. Faroudja processing is the film-buff's friend, and 1080p player to 1080p display is a no-brainer.

I've been fiddling with display calibration this week and trying out some color-space options in the 981 beta firmware. Watched a disc from HOUSE season 2: gorgeous color, and "I can't believe this is a standard DVD" image.
