No I am not PROVIDING such guide but rather SEEKING it.....

I know there are two other threads on ColorHCFR, and I have read a lot of the posts there, but I just don't get it. I am a complete novice when it comes to calibration. So please provide step-by-step guide on how I do this. I have Spyder2 hardware; have installed ColorHCFR on my labtop; and have the burned the HCFR DVD. Ready to go.. except missing some handholding from the kind souls of the forum.

I have the Sharp Z10K projector (old but still working fine) on a 1.3 gain white screen in a light controlled room.

So, let's start with the basics.

1. Where do I place the Spyder2? Postion it on a tri-pod facing the screen or the projector? At what distance?

2. What do I select from HCFR? DVD Manual, I presume?

3. What do I measure? All of Grey Scale, Contrast, Primaries, Secondaries, etc. or just the subset?

4. Once I have the results, what do I tweak and to what extent? I have the Z10K connected to the dvd player via DVI and in this mode I can't change the contrast and brightness, so I need to tweak the gamma values, I presume....

5. During the installation of ColorHCFR, it installed bunch of calibration files and on that list was my Sharp 10K. What is that and how do I access it?

As you can see, I am a complete novice that needs a lot of handholding, but one that's willing to learn ;-) Much thanks in advance to those that will help.

I would also like to know what to do with a Spyder2, ColorHCFR and a Samsung DLP TV.

I would also like to know what to do with a Spyder2, ColorHCFR and a Samsung DLP TV.

1s. the Sharp calibration file is for the ColorHCFR probe only, so you cant use with other probes
2nd -DVD manual, yes, if you plan to use a calibration disk such as AVIA, GetGrey, DVE, or even HCFR disk
3rd - on how to point the sypder, some say to point it a few feet (3feet) from the projector if its a front projector, some people or most people, such as I, point it at the screen as close as possible and angle the probe up about 45degrees, so that your not point at the shadow of the probe. If its a rear projector, then rightup against the screen
4th - do a contrast, brightness setting before any run (although you said you cant, with is very weird),color and tint
5th Run a greyscale, run a primary, run a secondary.
when the return values come back, you want to look at the following:
On the greyscale you want your coordinates to be x=.313 y= .329 (make sure you select in the Display area, x, y, Y or x, y, z)
adjust your cuts (for the lowend of the greyscale)
adjust your drives (for the highend of the greyscale)
5. on the primary or secondary, just CIE diagram to see how close your color and tint is arriving at the Reference points. what you want besides hitting the points, is that all colors and tint, no matter if they are perfect to reference triangle or not, that they remain on the same line, so you dont your tint off line from your primaries..This is a little more difficult to explain but I think if you first go with greyscale and then figure that out, you'll start to understand alot more.

I Just got my Pioneer PDP-427XA. Have a Eye One and ColorHCFR installed and ready to run on my macbook pro (parallels/windows xp-sp2). Just don't know a thing about calibrating yet... Is there a ColorHCFR-guide on ENGLISH some where?

Here is the response I gave on another thread. The first item is the general calibration FAQ, and the second one is not Color-HCFR specific, but does give you the basics of calibration with a sensor.First of all, there is a calibration FAQ here: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=585527.

For a general discussion of calibration, see umr's paper here: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/show...8&&#post6471368.

So, let's start with the basics.

1. Where do I place the Spyder2? Postion it on a tri-pod facing the screen or the projector? At what distance?

Tripod facing screen about 12-18 inches according to ColorVision and don't worry about the shadow it creates. According to ColorVision the light gathering of the probe is not affected by the shadow. Not sure about the HCFR and Sharp Z10K and how to deal with profile issue.

2. What do I select from HCFR? DVD Manual, I presume?

see other posters on this

3. What do I measure? All of Grey Scale, Contrast, Primaries, Secondaries, etc. or just the subset?

Mentioned before in other posts:

4. Once I have the results, what do I tweak and to what extent? I have the Z10K connected to the dvd player via DVI and in this mode I can't change the contrast and brightness, so I need to tweak the gamma values, I presume....

see above link

not clear how to deal with this situation (not having a profile for you combination of probe/display)

As you can see, I am a complete novice that needs a lot of handholding, but one that's willing to learn ;-) Much thanks in advance to those that will help.

You may want to consider other software with more support/hand holding...I know, since I'm in the same boat, though I've got some more experience (used to use SMARTIII years ago with an old CRT based display).

CALMAN may be a good investment if that software can support your situation.

Hope that helps.
