View Full Version : Idea for a New display (liquid crystal + optics)

I had a dream about this - seriously. I've been doing a lot of research on different displays. My 27" CRT finally died and I've been wanting a widescreen hdtv for awhile. LCD, Plasma, RP, fun stuff. I was having trouble sleeping the last few days because of a cold, and during one of my half-awake spills I started visualizing a full schematic of a new display technology...

Picture this.

A special fiber optic is created that has a nematic liquid crystal core. Each of 3 different fibers are hooked up to a Red, Green, or Blue light source (preferably laser). The fibers are laid across an electromagnetic grid.

This implementation requires a "refresh" rate - but its planar rather than linear. As light is pumped across all fibers, the grid pulses a charge from one side to another. The magnetic field causes the liquid crystal to twist, reflecting the light out of the optic fiber. The intensity of the light output correlates to the intensity of the magnetic field.

What this solves:

- No backlight leakage as in typical LCDs displays.
- Optimal refresh reduces energy requirements, reducing power costs and heat output.
- Quality of color can be controlled by a single emitter for each primary color.

Assuming you're an electrical engineer...

Describe it, do some patent research, patent it, develop it.

Else...

Go tell your dreams to a shrink or bartender ;)

Assuming you're an electrical engineer...

Nope. :D
