Just got a Elite 61" pro-1410HD monitor. I have an Onkyo progessive scan 6 disc dvd changer. My question is, one, does the Monitor itself upscale the 480p output and display it at 720p all by itself? Would I benefit from an upscaling DVD player much?

2nd question? Will a good upscaling DVD player (which is??) Denon, Onkyo, Pioneer, Oppo???? etc...... upscale better than a Toshiba HDDVD player. I see some of these players going on e-bay around the $300 mark. If they aren't better at upscaling a SD DVD player than the new Toshiba HD DVD's, should I just grab one of these Toshibas and that way I can watch new discs as well?

I too want to wait to sort out all this stuff, but for less than 400 bucks, the HDDVD will be more than some cheap upscaling, but i'm sure less than a Denon or Elite Upscaling player. With a 61" plasma, I want the best picture I can get for DVD's and it's hard to wait for these format battles. Most watching will be HD Content and SD satellite, but probably will watch 1-2 DVDs a week or so.

Yes. All fixed-pixel displays scale their input signals to the native resolution. A player might or might not perform this function better. See the stickies at the top of this forum, particularly "How Much is that Scaler in the Window?"

The Toshibas have gotten very good reviews for the quality of their SD-DVD upscaling and are said to be comparable to good SD-DVD players. It is certainly a reasonable way to go. The only thing you give up is the ability to play certain formats: PAL and non-region 1 disks, for example.

considering you can afford that set, I would 100% reco the Toshiba HD-1. Watch HD and SD upconvert (very well) now.

If Blue-Ray wins out, oh well, you still have an SD player.
