Hi All,

I would like to convert some h.264 .ts streams into h.264 hd-dvd compliant streams without having to re-encode (x264). I would like to burn them as hd-dvd9/hd-dvd5 across multiple disks.

Are there any transcoder or repackers, like HDTV2MPEG, but for h.264?

thx,
p.

in short no not yet. I was trying to do this same thing or even change mpeg2 to h264 or vc1 and make a HD-DVD compliant disks and its not possible yet. Nobody knows how to make their own h.264 or vc1 compliant hd-dvd or bd disk yet. Only HD mpeg2 can currently be made by home users. I THINK I read someplace that one of the burning software companies is working on a program that could make .264 compliant disks. (unless something has changed in the past few weeks since I was looking into this)

Thanks for the info, check this out:

They were able to put h.264 on a dvd9, and play it on a hd-dvd player (I tried the ISO on my xbox360/hd-dvd and it worked).

The only problem is that I don't want to re-encode my stream, and not knowing h.264 well enough, I don't now if my streams can be repacked to be hd-dvd compliant.

What you want can probably be done with the right demuxing and muxing tools (Elecard for the former, Sonic for the latter), but only if the original h.264 stream was encoded to HD DVD specifications in the first place (.6006 second GOP, etc.). Doom9.org is the best place to ask these questions.

It really depends how the .ts was made. It's certainly possible it exceeds the HD DVD spec in some way, like GOP length, buffer size, etcetera. A simple remux may not (or may) work.

I've been trying to get this information out of the authoring thread but I keep getting people telling me how to convert x264 to mpeg2 ;)

I'd love to be able to burn some movies with this codec to DVD-9.

That link I posted earlier covers converting something to a hd-dvd compatible h.264 stream using x264, so you might have some luck if I understood you correctly.

I'll still trying to avoid re-encoding using x264, but like I said, I don't know if its possible to "repackage" the stream into another format. In my head, it seems like it should be possible, but I don't know if there's something 'destructive' being done in the .TS originals that repacking software cannot recover from.

If it's fairly straightforward, I'd write a util, but the thought of digging around x264's codebase to extract the necessary routines frightens me :)

A lot of torrent sites already have the files re-encoded to x264. i guess maybe i should try it.
