Thanks to efralope for the list of BD releases.
chefboy1 01-31-07, 05:16 PM Looking at the current titles and known future releases, it appears Blu Ray is better at getting big blockbusters out, while HD DVD is stronger with more critically acclaimed movies. BD seems also to prefer the more recent movie titles (PS3 effect?) while HD DVD definitely has put out more of the classics.
I just got tired of reading in some threads how certain BD fanatics don't seem to find anything they like from HD DVD titles and the reverse, how HD DVD fanatics put down the BD list as "nothing they would buy". Clearly from the data, both sides have a lot of good movies, as judged by the professional critics (Rotten Tomatoes) or the general public (Gross Box Office).
Spektricide 01-31-07, 06:25 PM Thanks for the list of movies that rotten tomatoes considers rotten. I now know to disregard anything I ever read again regarding rotten tomatoes ratings.

This is what people have been saying for quite a while now. Both sides tend to attract different audiences (slight generalization).

hdkhang 01-31-07, 07:21 PM I enjoyed quite a few of the rotten titles.
Cheers...

Spektricide 01-31-07, 10:43 PM The simple fact that all of the so called "rotten" titles grossed over 100 million dollars is a testament to the fact that rotten tomatoes is out of touch with mainstream America. How artistically good or bad a movie rates is up to subjective opinion. The main point is this. People pay to be entertained. Obviously, all these rotten titles entertained people to the tune of 100 million dollars.

I think Rotten Tomatoes should consider that a compliment, given the utter trash that usually floats to the top of the US box office. At the time of writing, Epic Movie is #1. Take from that what you will.
People pay to be entertained.
People see movies for different reasons. Sometimes it's to be entertained.
Obviously, all these rotten titles entertained people to the tune of 100 million dollars.
That's assuming everyone who went to see those movies enjoyed them.

I wouldn't say the critics are out of touch neccessarily. Take for example POTC: Dead Man's Chest. Rotten Tomatoes gathered over 200 professional reviews, and more than half actually recommended the movie. Good thing about RT is that you can dig further in to the specific reviewer (say you generally like the reviewer from the New York Times or from Variety or Roger Ebert) and you can read their full review to decide for yourself.
And while entertaining, I wouldn't put any of those "rotten" movies on my Best Movies Ever list either.
I've certainly watched and enjoyed movies that I normally wouldn't have considered if it wasn't for some of these professionals.

Shudder. Yes, and I suspect I'd agree with the Rotten Tomatoes ranking of 0% fresh that Epic Movie had a day or two back. it's up to 3% fresh today, so at least some of the reviews reflect the fact that there is a portion of the market that loves this kind of thing - just not me. Of course I haven't seen the movie, just the trailer, but I'm not that interested in confirming my suspicions.
Neo1965 02-01-07, 01:25 PM And Jackass #2 tops the rental charts in Canada. Read into that what you may about what people want to watch.
This explains why youtube.com is so pervasive in our culture today.
audiophile897 02-01-07, 01:40 PM Jackass 2 didn't do to bad ratings wise on rottentomatoes if I recall. The first one did really bad I remember.
Spektricide 02-01-07, 06:01 PM My point is this.
Some of us might read some of Franz Kafka's great works on existentialism for general enlightenment into a higher state of understanding.
Some of us want to forget about work, school, kids, wife for 2 hours and just watch stuff blow up.
I'm not saying that the titles on the rotten list are gonna push the world into some higher state of zen, I'm just saying, it's pretty obvious by the number of sales these so called "rotten" titles do, that mainstream America isn't what rotten reflects. So irregardless of which format you support, they need titles that mainstream America is going to want to purchase.
Thanks for the list of movies that rotten tomatoes considers rotten. I now know to disregard anything I ever read again regarding rotten tomatoes ratings.
Agreed. If I, Robot and Mr. & Mrs. Smith are rotten movies, well then I guess I'm prouder than ever to like bad movies. Words can't describe how happy I'll be to own these two films on BD! :)
If you want a high density of critically acclaimed movies, just buy Criterion releases. But, obviously, people can't live on Criterion alone. One man's garbage could be another man's treasure. People want choice and variety, and the best way to get both is through quantity.
