Hello all...first post, so please go easy on me.

A few years back, after much reading and research, I purchased a Panasonic RP-91 and have been thoroughly pleased with the device since.

This past weekend, Barnes and Noble had a buy one, get one free special on TV DVD sets, so I bought each and every season of 24. Last night, I decide to start with Season 1, Disc 1, and when I turned on my RP91 and inserted a disc, I got an error...something like "No Disc" or "Disc Error". Unfortunately, I didn't really pay much attention. Instead, I turned it off (disc still inside) and tried to turn it back on again. Nothing...nada. The unit won't power up.

So...I thought I'd ask here to see if anyone had any thoughts or suggestions, or had encountered this behavior on their own RP91 before.

Also, to seek advice...should I just chalk it up to a few good years and move up/on to a new player, or is this one worth fixing?

Thanks in advance for your help...

Try unplugging the unit for a few minutes and then replug and retry. If no go, then unplug the player and open the player up and see if any obvious fuse or capacitor failure (burns, leaks). If anything is obviously blown you can try to replace that part if available from Ratshack. If not, time to get a new one.

We need your display and its specs to help you find a new DVD player.

Huey:

Thank you very much for the quick response.

I tried unplugging for a little while, and no dice. I'll take 'er apart tomorrow, but am not confident of what I'm gonna find. It's certainly worth a shot, though...

My current display is roughly as old as my RP91...it's a Mitsubishi WS-55809. Pic is still great, so haven't had to upgrade to anything newer or better...yet! I hope it stays healthly longer than the DVD player!

It sounds like it could be a mechanical failure. If the drive belt is broken, that will stop everything (I had that happen to an older laserdisk player). You can open it up and look inside to see if the problem is obvious.

I have an RP91 (that still works) but I got a new player anyway (I wanted an up-converting DVD player). I got the Sony NS75H - it has excellent audio performance (via the digital audio output) and the component out video is equal, or better, than the RP91 (on a PJ & 106" screen) - I haven't hooked up the HDMI to my new flat panel display yet. The other choice would be the Oppo 970H (no macro-blocking problems). These are the best 2 DVD players, IMHO (assuming you don't want to get into the HD player wars, like me).

The Oppo 981H is the newer version of the top rated 971H (no longer available). However, because the 981 uses the Faroudja chipset, it does exhibit macro-blocking artifacts on some displays (the reason for Huey's comments).

PS -- I don't think the 981H has component outputs & wouldn't be a good choice anywaty, for your display.
