View Full Version : HDMI between Westinghouse 37W3 and Samsung 9650 DVD
I am trying to view DVD's on a Westinghouse 37W3 monitor through my Samsung 9650 DVD player using HDMI. The DVD won't display on the screen when using the HDMI connection.
I called Samsung support and they said there is nothing they could do.... it is a copy protection problem with the Westinghouse 37W3. I then called Westinghouse and they said that there was nothing they could do it is a copy protection problem with the Samsung DVD player. Both Samsung and Westinghouse recommeded using their equipment with a different device and if it played/displayed it would *prove* that there device isn't the problem. I explained to both of them their logic was faulty. It is possible both the DVD player and screen will do fine with other HDMI connections, however, this combination is not working.
I am frustrated. Is there anyway to determine if the DVD or monitor is the problem in this marriage?
HDMI_Org 02-05-07, 04:36 PM The manufacturers are responsible for supporting these products and ensuring they are compliant and interoperate. Thanks for the response. I did post a message to the website. I will post the response I get, if any, here.
How long should I expect it will take the HDMI organization to respond to my email?
Vidmaven 02-20-07, 11:54 AM This seems like this is as good a place as any to post this. I just recently purchased a Westinghouse LTV 36w6HD LCD monitor and a Toshiba HD A1 HD DVD player. I am trying to get the video signal from the DVD player sent to the TV using an HDMI cable. I keep getting "HDMI ERROR 1" message on the DVD player. I have used the same HDMI cable with my Directv HD receiver on this TV and it works fine. Am I doing something wrong or is something just incompatible? I'm new to the HDMI world so I'm basically a noob when it comes to this new connection. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Vidmaven,
When I receive a response from the HDMI org I will post it here. I have not yet received one.
Well,
It has been over a month since I sent an email to the HDMI org as requested by the HDMI_0rg user on this board. I have received no response. The HDMI_org is as helpful as Samsung and Westinghouse were.
Who exactly is the HDMI org? Maybe I am being unrealistic in expecting a response, but the user HDMI_org got my hopes up.
Is there anyway to find out who is at fault when two components don't work with each other?
First, make sure you test with other devices. It may be that one device will work with other devices, and the other won't.
For example, go to BigBoxStore, and buy an LCD TV and another HDCP enabled player, on a credit card. Plug first the new player into your westinghouse, and then the Samsung DVD into the new TV. If one of those works, and the other not, you have good ammo against the customer service (my bet is on the Westinghouse being wrong, but I could bet wrong).
Then, return the electronics you bought within the stated return time for a refund (make sure you pick a store that doesn't charge re-stocking fees!). Also make sure you do this in the beginning of the billing cycle for your credit card, so you don't have to pay for the items when the bill comes, only to get the credit the next cycle :-)
Btw: HDMI.ORG is the industry association that keeps the HDMI standard and certifies manufacturers for compliance. It is funded by the consumer electronics manufacturers themselves, but has no end-user products of its own.

Thanks jwatte,
I actually brought my DVD player to a friends house and it worked using HDMI on his TV. I then hooked his DVD player to my Westy and it worked on the Westy using HDMI. Back to square one. The Westinghouse thread in this forum seems to have no significant HDMI issues.
This is very irritating. One of these needs to go back as a warranty item and I would rather send the right one, but I am not sure which one that is. It seems like one of these must not be meeting some specification. Could not this be tested with the right equipment?
With the right equipment (probably an HDMI protocol analyzer) you could test this. My guess is that that kind of equipment starts at about $10,000 and goes up from there (extrapolating from a cheap USB protocol analyzer and a more expensive FireWire protocol analyzer I've used in the past).
I would get a new of whatever were the cheaper component, which is probably the DVD player. Try that Oppo player everyone's recommending, perhaps?
