View Full Version : Harmony - Buy on e-bay? Buy from "authorized" retailer?

I'm trying to decide between the Harmony 880 & the 720. I am currently leaning towards the 720 based on cosmetics, but I'm having trouble finding it at anything less than $195 + tax & delivery, whereas I can get the 880 for about $160 delivered. I see the 720 on e-bay and could probably get it for around $150 or less.

Given that I've read numerous posts about people exchanging their Harmony remotes when there was a problem, is it safe to buy one of these on ebay? I wouldn't expect much if any "customer service" from the seller. Would Logitech honor the warranty? Do they require proof of purchase (or can I just register it as recieved as a gift)?

On a similar note, if I buy the 880 from an online retailer - will Logitech honor the warranty if the retailer is not an authorized retailer?

I would not buy it on EBay. But I don't trust anything on there really.

No reason to risk dealing with an eBay auction when the prices at Amazon.com are so good. As of right now, they have the 880 for $155 with a $30 mail-in rebate, bringing the total to $125. You can even get free shipping if you don't mind waiting a little longer. They don't have the 720 directly, so the best price there is $199 via Target--meaning you'd be better off with the 880 anyway.

I ordered my Harmony 550 from Amazon last week, and had it shipped 2-day for a total of $97. And I'll be getting another $10 back via the rebate once they get done with the 6-12 weeks it takes them to process it.

J&R (http://www.jr.com) seemed to have the best prices of any of the brick & mortar or more reputable online stores.

I imagine Logitech will honor the warranty if it's a retail packaged item, even if it's from an unauthorized seller. But then, why risk it? "You get what you pay for" is true more often than not in the world of online shopping.

No harm in purchasing on eBay. Check the feedback ratings, read the comments. You can probably find sellers with 100% positive and thousands of transactions. Read the descriptions closely. Pay with PayPal (there is built in protection). If you do the above, your risk is less than Amazon, and almost as low as buying from costco. I have bought numerous high end electronics on eBay and have never been disappointed. Lots of brand new Harmonys there.

My opinion of any "buy on ebay" question is that there is no right answer. There are just as many (if not more) legitimate businesses on eBay as there are crooks and if you know how to shop wisely you should apply the same criteria to eBay as you do with every other buyer. Harmony does not have any "authorized dealer" limitations that I know of... like URC for example.

Since I mentioned URC I should point out that Amazon.com is NOT an authorized dealer so they are no safer than eBay although many assume that they are by virtue of their brand and mega reputation.

Thanks for the info.

Leigh - I appreciate the Amazon tip. I might just get the 880 from them, but the rebate requires you to spend another $100 on electronics from Amazon from the purchase date of the remote until 3/5/07. Last week they had a different $30 rebate that did not require you to spend the extra $100.

Jim - Thank you for the info on the Logitech warranty and Amazon's dealer status.

I just ordered the 550 from DELL for $70 + $4.99 S&H this is with a 4% coupon OFF the Web.......so finally I have made the BIG decision, a local party via Craigslist is selling his 880 for $75 - BUT I like those extra keys on the 550 and some other features that I have read about here that the 880 does not have.
Looking forward to my 1st Universal Remote....

BEST Wishes! Michael ;)
