View Full Version : ISF calibration of LCD Projector....

As with anything I do, I try to do as much research up front so that I don't get caught by surprise later...and today it's all about getting my Sony HS51A ISF calibrated.

I am not so much concerned about the subjectiveness about how good/bad D65 looks, as I am about the stories I've read on the forum about LCD projectors not calibrating well.

Anyone have any real world experience with calibrating LCD projectors? or maybe someone that had their LCD projector calibrated? I'm certainly not looking to throw money at something that is already a sinking ship, but I would like more accurate colors out of my Sony.

Any advice or feedback is appreciated.

PJ usually have controls to achieve D65. The problem is that compared to DLP - the panel in an LCD is inherently a non-linear log gamma curve (distribution of RGB brightness levels). This is one reason they are turned down so much in their cinema presets - they are more linear there - it avoids the so called "S" curve you get in brite modes.. So that just means there is more work to get a greyscale that is flat on D65 from black to white and it will likely be a brightness hit you have to cover in your screen selection.

The other problems that exist in LCD panels are non uniforming shading or banding of the panel - and they often have RGB intensity that is too high or deeper than HD specs. There may not be controls to fix that or your panel may not have these problems. IRISes also typically impact greyscale as well - so harder to tune if used dynamically.

I would still have it calibrated though - it makes a big difference. D65 refers to the standard definition of B&W - but since video is colorized B&W - any color push in the B&W will show up as it underlies the colors. Typically makes things look flourescent lit rather than sunlit.

The difference between watching my Hitachi TX200 in calibrated vs default settings is HUGE! Definitely recommended.

Greetings

One of the things that bug me about the LCD FP units is the non-uniformity issue. the color shifts from left to right. You might get the middle calibrated ... but one side till looks more red and the other side is more green.

If you are big into Black and white films ... this characteristic of LCD will bug you too.

Does this mean you should not consider calibration ...? No ... just that some things calibration cannot fix ...
