I need a simple straight forward explanation of what it means, when an adv OR specs say, Dvix compatible, what does that really mean

will it play an AVI, or a an MP4, or does it mean

Play DVD vobs or mpegs that have been compressed using the Dvix codec

been there , did a search, but no clear answer, just a bunch posts about specs, or wish lists

I want an explanation-answer, what does it really mean, what can a player that is dvix compatible do ?

does it play the same file my Pc will play or does it mean something else,

can i take a dvd disk with (5) 700 meg avi encoded by dvix and play those movies

I don't know exactly but I've been looking for a DVD player that can play .avi files too -I've tried a lot of different ones -ranging from Sony - LG - cheap Chinese brands like BBK -all of them seem to be able to play most .mp4 files but I've only found one that can play .avi and even then it only played 1 out of the 6 Grey's Anatomy files I had on the DVD.

I live in Hong Kong so I download almost all of the TV I watch from the States as it usually takes 1-2 years before they hit cable or satellite over here. If anyone can recommend a good DVD player that supports .avi files that would be great.

Yes, as long as it is a codec and resolution the player can handle (ie, *not* HD DivX resolution, and not h.264 or similar codec). Some players (like our Philips 5960) can even take the files on a thumbdrive. We do this all the time.

kenny, the Sony players are notorious for not playing downloads, but the BBK player (sold as Oppo in the US) should have had no problem, which suggests that the particular files you are looking for are an unsupported resolution (though this seems *extremely* unlikely for a downloaded US TV show) or possibly were corrupted. - DR

Don't know but my Oppo 970HD seems to play them perfecctly, and the FF and RW work great!

thank you,

I kept seeing advs, put no clear explanation of what to expect, or what they will play

My Oppo 981 will play Divx files burned through Roxio EMC9. It would not play .mpg files I burned willy nilly onto a DVD. I assume I wld have to convert them to DVD format with EMC. Have not tried .avi or other file types after .mpg failure.
Nor have I tried to convert .mpg/.avi to Divx but believe that should work.

I expect it is specific to DviX licensed codec, and the encoded files have to be done using the DviX 6 or other licensed version

you could test this by downloading some DviX sample files, with the logo water mark and some other avi files encoded with Xvid, and then burn them all to one DVD and see which ones one play
