View Full Version : HD DVD/DVD Combo prices continue to fall
efralope 02-01-07, 05:00 PM First it was the Scorpion King at $34.99 MSRP (which you could find for less than $24).
Then it was Brokeback Mountain Special Edition (which was day-and-date with the SE 2-disc DVD) for $34.99 MSRP (which you could find for $24).
Now, Wicker Man from Warner is a Combo at $28.99 MSRP (now found at many places for $20).
I'm sure their new movies will still mainstain a premium it's nice to know prices are falling...
EDIT: WICKER MAN NOT A COMBO AFTER ALL, OPPS!
Gary Murrell 02-01-07, 05:07 PM the only thing wrong with combo releases is the price, now with 30gb I couldn't care less, only the price annoys me

laserguns 02-01-07, 05:14 PM are the prices dropping because retailers aren't moving as many of them vs regular hd-dvds
or
are the prices dropping because the studios are lowering the msrp?
efralope 02-01-07, 05:18 PM Well, $34.99 MSRP is pretty generous IMO. That means Best Buy isn't gonna try to charge $37.99 for them (are they allowed to sell above MSRP prices?).
Wicker Man is $28.99 MSRP, so even regular stores can knock out a few bucks.
it's only $20 on amazon.com though:

JBlacklow 02-01-07, 05:22 PM If announced titles are correct, the trend is actually heading up again. "The Good Shepherd" MSRP is $39.95 and "The Nutty Professor" and "The Jerk" have an MSRP of $34.98. What's even worse is that that the last two are 15/9 combos and "The Nutty Professor" is apparently barebones.
efralope 02-01-07, 05:32 PM hmm, $34.98 sounds like a far cry for the $40 for most combos...
it's a good trend.. $34.98 means you can find it for less than $25 probably (even cheaper online)...
it wasn't that long ago that King Kong (not a combo) was released at $40 MSRP.
stevenjw 02-01-07, 06:05 PM It's a good trend, but they should be the same price period! They're still between $5-$11.50 more expensive then the non-Combo Blu-Ray verions. You can check out the following sale as proof:

Mark Zimmer 02-01-07, 07:25 PM My Best Buy almost always prices HD DVD and combos at MSRP or occasionally higher.
So I almost never buy HD DVDs and combos there.
Spot the correlation.
Dave Mack 02-01-07, 07:37 PM I think owners have said that The Wickerman is not actually a combo though

edit: been confirmed by Peter Bracke of HighFi Digest. Not a combo so the cheaper sale price makes sense.
:(
Fettastic 02-02-07, 09:30 AM I own it, not a combo. Amazon has screwed up cover art. It was probably going to be a combo at some point, but like Poseidon, they changed their minds for whatever reason.
BuGsArEtAsTy 02-02-07, 09:40 AM Fearless is still outrageously expensive in Canada.
I got Batman Begins (CAD$20 on sale) for literally half the price of what Fearless goes for at many stores (CAD$40).
I'd say prices are droping becase of low sales and the fact that universal is going 90% combos so hopfully that means the cost to make each disc has lowered alowing for lower prices.
acave_uk 02-02-07, 10:43 AM I was never a fan of combo discs. But it does give the viewer a chance to see the difference between the two versions. On the negative side I prefer one side of the disc to have a printed label as the media is marked very easily.
