Many of this forum know about the THX Optimizer (http://www.thx.com/home/dvd/optimizer/index.html) that is included with a THX certified DVD. It is not the best calibration DVD but it is better than not using any type of calibration DVD to calibrate your HDTV.

THX is offering a free THX Optimizer DVD with the Advanced Test Pattern and a free pair of their famous THX blue glasses if you bought the US version of the Cars DVD.

THX states...

All US versions of the feature film Cars were shipped with an encoding error on Pixar's Advanced Test Pattern within THX Optimizer. In an effort to provide you with the best possible set up tools, Pixar and THX will send you a complete version of THX Optimizer (http://www.thx.com/home/dvd/optimizer/index.html) and THX Blue Glasses (http://www.thx.com/home/dvd/blueGlasses.html), free of charge. Please submit this shipping form to receive your copy of THX Optimizer (including Pixar's Advanced Test Pattern): All you have to do is visit http://www.thx.com/home/dvd/optimizer/cars/fpTest.html and fill out the online form and include the ISBN number on the back of your Cars DVD.

What form??? :confused:What the heck?!?! THX.com has taken the http://www.thx.com/home/dvd/optimizer/cars/fpTest.html page down. They also removed the Cars US version link from the http://www.thx.com/home/dvd/optimizer/index.html page for the Cars US version link is what took you to the http://www.thx.com/home/dvd/optimizer/cars/fpTest.html page that I found and filled out. Hopefully THX.com will put it back up.

I got my copy today with the free glasses, took a couple of weeks to get here. I'm guessing they got flooded with requests as I've seen the above info posted at several dozen sites.

Geez, I'm glad I signed up for mine when I did, last week. I bet the response was overwhelming for them.

Looks like THX has pulled the plug on the free calibration disk and blue glasses. I just got mine in the mail today. Unless they reopen the page to the link I posted above.

I can't get any THX site to work. I could be that they are having website issues and not that they ended the offer.

Per this page (http://www.thx.com/home/dvd/blueGlasses.html) the promo has ended. Thanks for the interest in THX. The free THX Optimizer Blue Glasses promotion has now ended. However, if you would like to purchase a pair, please visit our online store (http://www.co-store.com/thx).NOTE: These links both worked as of 2:30 PM PST, 2/4/2007.

Per this page (http://www.thx.com/home/dvd/blueGlasses.html) the promo has ended.NOTE: These links both worked as of 2:30 PM PST, 2/4/2007.That promo was different than the offer THX offered for those who bought the US version of the DVD movie "Cars". That offered allowed the owners to get a DVD with just the THX Optimizer and the THX Blue Glasses, free of charge.

THX has removed the "US Cars" link that was at the bottom of this page...

THX.com has put the page back (new www address) up for the free THX Optimizer DVD with the Advanced Test Pattern and a free pair of their famous THX blue glasses if you bought the US version of the Cars DVD. Based on the previous www address I have to guess that THX was just testing the process and now they are ready to roll.

If you cannot read the ISBN, you can find it at Toysrus.com (http://www.toysrus.com/sm-disney-pixars-cars-the-movie-dvd-11-7--pi-2480968.html). The number is labeled "UPC/EAN/ISBN" but is really just the ISBN number.

Yeah, I just checked site again and it does say 4-6 weeks, guess I was just getting jumpy. Pretty sure I didn't order mine until around feb 2. sometime between jan 25 and feb 2 anyway. I still have the Avia filter, so no big issue, just thought the glasses might be a little easier to use.

Thanks,

Hi All,

I moved to a new home and I can't find my avia disk. I do have this free thx dvd with glasses. Just wondering how accurate are the results with this thx dvd against an avia. Has anyone try to do calibrate using this dvd then compare the results on avia?

Thanks

dimitriNo based on my experience. The filters that came with AVIA were of different from the DVE ones. Example - both have blues but when you compare them side by side, DVE's blue is darker.

They should give equal results.I've used both and they do give the same results. I have the AVIA, DVE and THX Optimizer glasses - they all seem to give the same results with AVIA, DVE, and GetGray calibration discs.

BTW, my free glasses haven't arrived yet. I ordered mine right near the end of the original promo.

I have filters from AVIA, DVE, THX, AND the film strip that originally came with Video Essentials ;) The film strip is the darkest and hardest to use.

No based on my experience. The filters that came with AVIA were of different from the DVE ones. Example - both have blues but when you compare them side by side, DVE's blue is darker. My answer may have been misleading as I read it back. I was referring only on the question "are all blue filters available the same?". So they may not be of the same hue but when used accordingly with their respective program (DVE or AVIA), you should attain the intended optimization.

Anyway, I'm still waiting for that freebie! *double sigh*

Belive it or not, mine arrived yesterday, 10/8/2007, and I "think" I ordered mine some time in late Feb early March.

I received a "THX Optimizer 2.0 with Advanced Test Pattern for Cars" disc, the TXH optimizer 2.0 glasses, and THX Optimizer Instructions (nine 8.5 x 11 pages).

They sent it first class postage ($1.81 usd).

Thanks THX!

LOL I have a pair of 3-D glasses that came with the “Hunted Castle” IMAX DVD all I need to do is close one eye the right eye and use the left eye which is viewing though the blue filter. Simple but affective simple and there’s no waiting, or I could pop on down the road and buy some colour filter gel and hold it up in front of me and close one eye to focus with.

One other thing there’s been a considerable cutback on THX certified feature films since DVD came around there was lots of talk around the laserdisc days, I don’t think Disney use THX anymore which is why I took Pirates 2 back because there was major fault where pixels was recorded onto the finished region 2 product, yes it was on all the discs. So thank you THX for not being involved because it made the film look like a complete letdown!:(

All THX DVDs have the THX Optimizer (http://www.thx.com/home/dvd/optimizer/index.html) on it. You can order the THX Blue Glasses (http://www.thx.com/home/dvd/blueGlasses.html) for $1.99.

For those of you who have calibrated using these glasses and the optimizer I'm curious as to your results. I've tried a few times using this combo(and different thx dvd's) and I get very over saturated colors. My eyes plus the filter tell me I am doing it right as per the instructions but the results are obvious when viewing a movie with the naked eye. Any suggestions before I go and get my eyes checked? Maybe it's me.

It's possible your brightness, contrast or both is turned down to low, that will oversaturate your colors.

i know its an old thread but why start a new one.

guys where do they sell this dvd and glasses? the website doesnt sell the dvd as far as i can tell.

also, when i finally get to calibrating my equipment i assume you dont need to re-calibrate every time you watch a new movie? just once and thats it i hope.

dumb question i guess but i want to make sure.

Greetings

The optimizer is found on any thx mastered DVD. Big disney flicks and STar wArs films have it.

Glasses are purchased through THX or JKP site.

Since you want to go the cheap route ... then it is good enough.

If you want to do it better ... a real test disc like DVE or AVIA or get gray will be better.

The limitation of the THX disc is that it is only supposed to be idea for the movie that comes on the same disc.

Isn't that just stupid?

It negates the calibration from THX disc to THX disc and it negates the ability to see a THX DVD ideally on an AVIA or ISF calibrated display. Very proprietary..

Maybe there is something more to this. Like that was the intent, but now all THX patterns are standardized or something..

Yes, it is profoundly stupid. I have actually struggled for years to find the right words of astonishment, confusion, and befuddlement to describe just how deeply absurd the whole idea was. "Bush" is the only description that really captures the depth of retardation and idiocy of the concept. The original idea, as I understand it, was to insert patterns during the mastering process, which then as they drifted away from what they should be along with the content, could then be read by a THX certified DVD player which would then compensate for the mastering errors that were introduced. In other words, if the disc came out mastered wrong, instead of FIXING THE DISC and making it accurate, or fixing their own mastering chain, you'd have to adjust per-disc to compensate for the fact that THX apparently assumes that they themselves are incapable of producing a competently mastered product. And then you'd have to compensate for their incompetence on a per-title basis. Absolutely insane.

Maybe there is something more to this. Like that was the intent, but now all THX patterns are standardized or something..

Thankfully it was never fully implemented, and I think you'll find that most of the patterns are actually correct. Though some are clipped. So again, just use a proper test disc that actually has accurate patterns.

I don't know if all the engineers went on a company retreat in the woods and did too many mushrooms and LSD or something to come up with that whole idea, but thankfully it's died a thorough death.

Hello There,

I was also looking for a pair of them. Took me a while but THX
does still have them (no longer free though..bummer!).

They're available at the THX store (I wanted to post a direct link
to it but the site here says, "You are only allowed to post URLs once you have at least 3 posts. If you are a spammer, please go elsewhere. If not, sorry for this issue the spammers have made for.")

So...looks like I'll have to post '2 more messages' before I can do
that. :(

Oh..well....the things a body has to do to help folks out...

When you finally do make it to the THX Store, please be aware that you have to create an account to order them..no big deal there.

The only downside I've noticed is that they charge an exorbitant amount
for shipping... the glasses themselves are $1.99 per pair but the S/H is
$11.19 for a total of $13.18!!

Still....for those who have 'spent the coin' for a HDTV like either a Sony or Sammy, $14 +/- is going to be chump change.

Hope this info helps folks out. I'll post again after I've received the glasses
and let you know how long it took, etc.

You'd think that THX would have immediately linked info
on where to get their Optimizer glasses on the optimizer
page....but, nooooo! (proably would have made 'too much
sense',lol).

I wonder if anyone else has found an alternate vendor
that doesn't charge that kind of S/H?

Or...maybe just include a pair with a newly made DVD as
an extra 'thank you' for the customer's purchase (and
thereby underlying support of THX as used by the movie
maker). Oops...that would also 'make too much sense',lol.

The system calculates UPS - so we have to manually change the cost after your order.
