Still have an old UTV working fine. When I reactivated DirecTV service, I tried to get the update months ago. I could never get it to work. I have VOIP over Verizon FIOS (their fiber optic DSL), so I presume that was the problem. I tried a couple of regular analog lines, but it always hung at 93% complete.

Is it still available via phone? How difficult is doing the winhex thing? I've never done something like it before. I'm close to signing up for DirecTV's HD DVR, so I don't want to invest any more money.

It is still available via phone. The best way to do the update via phone is to get as "clean" a phone line as possible. Try and disable/disconnect any extensions/services that may unexpectedly cause the UTV Modem to drop out.

Disable the Call Waiting, Use a "clean" extension phone line, remove/bypass other items on the same line that may cause interference.

I personally plan to maintain my UTVs until DTV comes up with a much more stable and simple DVR system... OR I rig up a PC based DVR that can do much the same thing.
