icecow, tell me about shaving. have you watched the wet shaving videos at google video and/or youtube?

icecow
02-01-07, 12:06 AM
I'm guessing you have a thick dense beard like mine.

shaving has always been a pain. I used disposable single edge razors before I started using safety razors aka double edged razors aka DE razors. The two blade disposables just clog up after several strokes. Maybe the mach5 junk do better but my face trashes blades fast so there's no way I could afford them if they worked.

Now I use a safety razor called a 'slantbar'. It sort of twists the blade slightly for a more sheering edge. It is easy to tear up ones face with one. I was in no hurry to use it. After I got used to a standard DE I tried the slantbar. The first shave went pretty well because I spent an exagerated amount of time. Then, on subsequent days as I let by guard down, I started tearing up my face here and there and stopped using it. Then a month or so later I started using it again and had no problems and never stopped using it. It is particularly enjoyable when I haven't shaved in 4-5 days. It has a sheering action.

I don't recomend rushing things with DE razors. visualize a 2 month stretch and nonchalantly live it out. I'd describe successfully using a slantbar on a 4 day beard as similar to scraping your face with a clamshell in 2" patches with a (learned) even amount of pressure. It sheers it right off. Then, if I bother(about half the time), I wash my face/relather and go a second pass upwards with much lighter pressure (the weight of the razor (or the simulated weight of the razor in upstrokes) is nearly enough).

When shaving each day, or every other day, I use the non-slantbar.

A lot of it is learning the direction your hair grows on your face. It helps much to know. After 3 or 4 months I started j-hooking and similar techniques. It is hooking the razor in a j-motion on certain areas of your face (areas that you know which direction the hair grows) that are more difficult to clear.

Most shaving creams out there are crap. Theres many creams that are muuch better. Some are much better at $6, and of course others are sold as luxury items at $40 a pop.

For someone who is not interest in DEs I (everyone) still recommend distinguishing good shaving creams from bad. Low mass foams might be the worst. I believe they took root because they are fun like whipcream and the optimised volume is confused with a optimal texture.

DE razors are loosely clasified as gentle or agressive. With a thick beard I need an agressive one (not sure how it works with reg or thin beards). There's two forms of an agressive razors: an adjustable razor cranked up, and a non adjustable razor set to position. The non adjustable is the way to go IMO.. the angle is set correctly. Turning up an adjustable will make it agressive, but IMO also gives it an undesirable angle. Each non-adjustable razor has it's own idea of closness and angle. I've tried a lot of razors and I like the Merkur HD. Many people do, it is popular, but after trying many, I concured with the mob.

Proraso is a shaving cream I recommend first because it is great, cheap and accessable. It has been used in Italy for ~70ish years (still is). It could be gotten in the States online or at italian grocery stores because italians often ask for it. And lucky for me, they started selling it at Target the same time I started using DE razors. It is not in the mens shaving section, it is in a different section (sometimes called 'Spa'). The section has a bunch of girls stuff and a 1/4 row of mens stuff.

I could send you new average/decent razor to try and some blades, or direct you to cheap place to get a merkur HD. I really don't see a point of using a second best razor after trying figuring out the one that works best for me, or you. I think it's $23.

I can tell you more but I'd like to know you are still listening before I take the time.

Where do you think snowcones come from?

Beards are made of tiny crystaline chains (nano icicles)

The lines at the barber shops are long so I just do it myself and hand snowcones to kids through the fence.

Pushing the snowcone market makes more fiscal sense than installing heaters.

That reminds me..

Does that book you and 5 others wrote include your ReplayTV Case Modification Tutorial? Shouldn't you line the inside of the flimsy cardboard box with fermica or something? and change the LED to pink? I digress.

I found your book to be a tremendous value. It can be acquired new for 99 cents via amazon. I got interested in your book after watching a youtube video where a teenager explained how to rip a phonebook in half. Unfortunately, the $3.50 shipping killed it for me.

On a more serious note I think you should refer to your case mod as a 'proof of concept', not a tutorial. You said yourself you removed the parts after a few weeks.
If you ever revisit the mod, may I suggest using a Hello Kitty box (cool), or paris hilton box (mass apeal).

It's in your future

Horrid, horrible, low-impact OT breaking news

Van Halen reshaped the rock genre in the 70s untill the roth/eddie breakup.

What would it take to get them back together? Roth getting a little bit less obnoxious? This is the grand lesson on holding out(eddie!).

Since the platonic(as far as I know) middleschool mariage fell apart, Roth was on his way to has-been-ia, and bitchin eddie continued his party/drug/nicotine drug crusade and showed the world is dominance by swapping out singers like a freak geek swaps out pci cards.

When would the roth/eddie standoff end? eddie showered himself in 'never! I won sucka' glory' ever since.

What would break the standoff?

Apparently, desperation weaved from age, substance abuse, and mental deteriation(sp).

Have you checked out eddie lately? watch this 2007 fender show
