I need to replace my dead dvd player, which was using optical audio into my Yamaha RX-V630 receiver (video was component directly from the dvd player to the hdtv). I'm curious about HDMI...my tv has an HDMI input, but if I use that for both audio and video, the audio would be coming out of the tv's speakers, right? If my 630 does not have any HDMI capabilities, what's the best way to make use of the receiver and its 5.1 capabilities? Would HDMI be a waste just for the video signal? Can I pass the audio signal from the tv into the receiver only (no tv speaker audio when playing dvds)?
If one has a receiver that has HDMI inputs/outputs, I suppose you'd need two HDMI cables to pass the HDMI from the dvd through the receiver and into the tv, if you wanted to keep the receiver in the loop?
Thanks!
Gary
