Big news HD-DVD fans, as long as my distributor is accurate which they usually are we have one of the big titles getting a street date:

Children of Men: 03/27/07 in a combo and msrp is $39.98

It'll be a blind buy for me. But it sounds like Universal is going to go all out for this release, so it should be great.

Man, I'm kind of bummed that I saw this one in the theater! This is a great flick - great for all you sci fi fans and a surpising amount of good old action adventure.

Cool. My friend highly recommended the movie and now I can get it in HD. Maybe even a blind buy if it is as good as people say.

yes some great action adventure, but IMO definitely not the "good old" variety. :)

if anything i thought this movie shrugged off many action/adventure conventions and stereotypes. great, extremely intense movie.

Combo flipper disc => no deal

I will import it from Europe - the world is still nice and combo-free over there...

Combo or not, it would still cost $40.

Just look at King Kong, no combo, no SD features, but U-Control interactive features (like Children of Men). It was $40

Sounds like Universal is charging premium because

1. it's a new movie
2. it's including advanced interactivity

I don't think the combo format is ALWAYS to blame when it comes to new releases...

Off topic, but is a combo disc really a "flipper"? Isn't calling a disc a flipper implying that it must be flipped in order to watch the whole movie? A combo is just a two-sided disc, surely, with different content on each side.

you're not alone, but studios took notice when they sold 2-disc DVD sets with a markup over standard editions...

that said, the #1 reason it'll be $40 is that it's a new movie... studios feel they can charge a $5-$10 MSRP premium over catalog titles...

Best news I've heard all week. I'd pay 50 if that was the MSRP.

I thought this movie was excellent, well worth the money spent for a theatre ticket... can't wait for it to be released on HD DVD.

I'm in agreement with this. These combo discs aren't flippers... I think it's just people that are frustrated with having to pay more for a combo disc... and rightfully so.

Has there been any DVD ever that was a flipper to watch the whole movie? I've had 2 disc movies (that require 2 discs to watch the whole movie), but never flippers in this sense. I'd call them a 'changer'. :) This reminds me of the DVDs with widescreen on one side and standard on the other.

And who cares about artwork on the disc itself. I mean, it's nice and all (don't get me wrong), but does anyone sit around admiring artwork on the disc instead of watching the movie?

I can think of one early DVD I own that requires a flip to see the 2nd half of movie..STARGATE. It totally ruins the mood to have to get up and flip. Glad these didnt occur more. Takes you back to the early LD days.

Grumble...mumble... where's the cost saving HD-DVD now?

Question: Are 90% SD-DVD releases from Universal going to be combos as well? If so, the it's the SD-DVD owners are really getting the price shaft. A typical DVD movies is $15-20. Would you pay $40 for an SD-DVD??

EDIT: Even though it's expensive, at least it's a title release. There is some silver lining, I suppose.

What Warner is killing is their own sales. By not having product on the shelves and by pricing it too high when it does arrive, they are hurting themselves and creating ill will among consumers on both sides of the early-adopter fence.

Sales of standard DVDs are where the big money is currently, but this irrational fear of betting on the wrong horse is causing them to hedge their bets and waste valuable time. I don't think anybody outside the Warner boardroom truly believes TotalHD combo discs are a good or lasting idea.

Sooner or later they'll come to their senses because the market will slap them awake. In the meantime it's probably true that the delay hurts HD DVD more, but Blu-ray fans aren't getting any Warner titles either.

LOL...price rape is a good term. :) I do agree....this combo crap is worthless. Who wants to pay for the inclusion of a standard dvd when you are purchasing the title for HD playback? This title should be no more than $19.99 out of the gate(Amazon) in HD with the retail on the disc being $10.00 less than what is stated. The retail prices on all HD titles coming out need to drop by a good $10.00 or so if either side is hoping to draw in "normal" customers as oppose to early adopters. I am sure that will happen eventually but why not just do it now? This is a format war and either side should be looking to increase it's user base. What better way to do that then to reduce the purchase prices of these discs.

You mean Universal don't you?

Actually I think the argument applies to both. I'd just finished reading a thread full of speculation that Warner is holding HD DVD titles to get Blu-ray combos ready, and then dove into this thread where people are complaining about paying more for Universal HD DVDs with standard DVD versions on the flip side.

To me, both ideas make about as much sense as those old-school DVD flippers with widescreen on one side and foolscreen on the other. All are unnecessary abominations that cost more to make and appeal to fewer rather than more potential customers.

Trouble is, by the time the studio donkeys realize it's a mistake, we'll all be forced to decide whether to waste our money buying them or wait, and wait some more, for a repackaged version down the road.

The movie will look great in HD. The cinematography and production carries the movie more so than the plot or acting (except for Michael Caine). Although it won't have the TV HD video look so the PQ police may not like it. :)

Anyone caught paying $40 for this movie should feel ashamed for spending that much. I know personally I will end up spending between $23-$25 for this. Which for a new title on HD-DVD isn't a price rape.

Price is really an Issue I was going to pick up The Departed but $34.99 at BB, $27.99 on Amazon, I ended Up getting it for $13.99 for the 2 Disk SD version that added the 90 minute Doc on Scorsese. Upconverted to my 1360x768 LCD it look pretty Nice, the HD would of Had more Solid Black Levels and a Bit more Detail, but the Price and that Damn Flipper still made me go SD.

I did a search on Amazon.com and Happy Feet and Relentless Enemies HD DVD are both up for pre-order (I just typed 'Happy Feet hd dvd' and the search result lead me to the correct listing). March of the Penguins is also up for pre-order on DVDEmpire.com.

Nevertheless, I believe all these 3 Warner titles are already up for pre-order on Warner Home Video site (www.warnervideo.com) much earlier.

Children of Men was just officially announced hours ago, so possibly the listings will not be up so soon, although some sites have reported earlier that it will be released on March 27.

Yes, I've seen the HDD article before but don't know if it can be considered official announcement since they list the price of Children of Men HD DVD/DVD Combo as $34.95 but the price of new titles on the Combo is priced at $39.98 SRP?

If anyone is in doubt about this movie -- add another vote for it being fantastic (it's pretty sad it did so poorly in theatres, it deserved to be a 100m+ movie).

The last half hour is very intense too and should look/sound stunning in HD (all of it should, but that part I thought of especially after seeing it).

Yup that's the point of dystopian cinema . It hit me in my gut as well. At first I didn't know what to think but then I realize the movie was very thought provoking on many levels. I view it like I viewed the final Matrix chapter. It wasn't a typical Hollywood ending but it was more "real" to me.

Worst...cover art...everrr

Seriously, how about the fetus poster? I'd even take the one of Clive Owen looking out of the broken window. Hell, or even just give me the logo with the solar eclipse for the O in 'of'. For a movie that actually had pretty good one-sheets and tag lines, this is a crap cover. Better than regoin 2's though, at least we can say that.

With that said, anybody know how to make a good custom cover?
