View Full Version : How Much Bass is in Rock Recordings?

Hey guys:

As I have been shopping around for subwoofers and talking to different people, I hear more and more about how rock music CD's (especially classic rock) very rarely extend low in bass. So, a subwoofer often won't do much good for example, unless you set the frequency *very* high on it.

So, I was trying to understand "generally" how low rock recordings on CD's extend to. For example, bands like Led Zeppelin, Pearl Jam, U2, Eric Clapton, The White Stripes, The Who, The Doors, etc.

Of course it will vary from recording to recording, but generally speaking, how low do these CD's get? Are there specific CD examples you can can give and indicate "around" how low they go? I just want to get a rough idea.

Thanks!!!
Dave

Most of the kick drum and lower notes on a bass guitar is around 35-45Hz. It really depends on the recording, mixing and mastering.

Low E on the bass is 41.2Hz. The kick drum probably goes a little deeper.

Thanks guys.

The chart is very cool. Regarding old recordings from the 70's that are on CD's (like the examples I gave): were they able to achieve the levels described in the chart?
