Hi - I just enabled the HD DVD feature on my Netflix account. However I'd like some clarification on how their queuing system works when it comes to HD DVDs. Unfortunately their customer service is not helpful so I thought some of you guys may know...

1) I enabled the feature to tell the Netflix system that my preference is HD DVD. However, do I understand correctly that if a standard def version of the movie is available but the HD DVD version is not, that they will send me the standard def version?

2) If the answer to #1 is Yes, is there any way to set up their system so I can tell it that I only want a HD DVD version of a movie? For instance if a movie is available in standard def but not in HD DVD, I want their system to keep me on a Short Wait or Long Wait until the HD DVD becomes available. Is this possible??

3) If #2 is not possible, then how often do you guys wind up with the standard def version? I can see myself sending back a standard def version again and again until they finally send me a HD DVD version - would be a major PITA.

4) How good is Netflix about adding new HD DVD releases for old movies? For instance I see that they do not yet have the HD DVD version of The Mummy Returns, yet this has been available for a couple weeks already.

Thanks!

Once I enabled HD DVD as my prefered format, that is all they ever sent me. If the title is 'checked out' and not available, they skip to the next disk in the list. There might be exceptions, but this has been my experience. If you enable both BD and HD-DVD, you specify a preference between the two, and any titles available in both will be added to your queue as the prefered format.

If an HD-DVD version of the movie is "available" (that is, it's in their system either as a current or coming release) you will get a dropdown next to the movie in your queue, and you can select between DVD and HD-DVD. If you choose HD-DVD, you will NOT get the standard def DVD, even if the HD-DVD has not yet been released or is on very long wait. It will just sit in your queue until the HD-DVD is available.

Some people say they have received standard def DVDs instead of HD-DVDs, but those are Netflix mistakes. Personally, I have never had that problem, I have always received the HD-DVD version.

If you are at all able to select HD-DVD for a movie, Netflix will wait for the HD-DVD if that is what you have selected.

Just try it, it's simpler to do that it is to explain. Bottom line is, what you see in your queue is what you get (unless Netflix screws up).

Thanks guys - I see exactly what you are talking about now that I've added a few into the queue. This is great news that it works this way - just as I wanted.
