Hey guys,

I am new to this forum, and to this whole HD tv thing. I just purchased the Samsung HLS 5687W and the Samsung DVD HD960 to go with it... needlees to say, I am a little dissapointed with the PQ. Anone who has this setup, and is satisfied with their PQ, please let me know what you have all the settings for the DVD and TV set to and I would really appreciate it.

Thanks in advance. You could even save time by just going to the menu screen and taking a picture of each, and post it...

THANKS AGAIN,

Ndeedone

I don't have this DVD player, but I do have this TV. I would recommend starting here: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=7958019&&#post7958019

I purchased the Samsung DVD-HD960 in July 2006 about a month before I purchased my current HDTV the Samsung HL-S5679W thinking they would go great together.
I too was let down. Macroblocking (mainly in the form of coarse color banding) was terrible with this combination. DLPs (at least for now) already have an 8-bit coarseness and don't need a video source adding more. The Samsung DVD-HD960 Faroudja chipset has it bad. I ended up selling mine to a friend who isn't such a "nit" (my friends name for me regarding home theater stuff "nitpicker" ;-)) as me.
Movies with subtle gradients like Ultraviolet could look absolutely terrible especially with gradients that transitioned to black. The movie RV looked incredible in bright scenes but the macroblocking would appear in dark scenes, black transitions, etc., etc.
Maybe the newer Samsung DVD players coming out this year without Faroudja will be a better match for their very own Samsung DLP HDTVs.

Dis you consider the oppo-970 that has no macroblocking issues.

This is all really good information, but doesn't really help me out too much unless if I want to sell my dvd player, and purchace one later or go get the OPPO... I do appreciate the responces, but would like to know if anyone who has opted to keep their DVDHD960, (and are satisfied) how do you have it set????

Thanks again.

PS- I am not trying to be rude, it is just that my brain is not awake just yet...

I am in the same boat. I have the Samsung HLS 6187 and brought the Samsung HD960 thinking they would be great togther because of the 1080P. Well, I haven't been blown away with the picture quality either. At the moment, I am going to keep it, but down the road, I am thinking about replacing it with the Toshiba XA-2.

I also posted my settings in the Samsung DVD (1080p) HD960 thread.

I would be interested in other members settings as well who have the same set up (i.e., HLS 6187 and HD 960).

Thanks!

I agree!

I would like to see what everybody has their setting to, and see if there are some similarities to this madness.

The first place to start is to get the Avia or Digital Video Essentials DVD and calibrate your TV to match the output of your DVD player. Both of these discs have turtorials to help you learn how to do basic video and audio calibrations for your HT setup.
