View Full Version : Im having a problem with the bass output of my Denon 3805.
Something really strange has happened. Last weekend I noticed that the bass output to the front speakers has increased so much that it is to annoying to watch a movie and my Buttkickers have lost most of its bass output from subwoofer out jack. I have already turned down all settings of the bass on the receiver and it still is annoying. My next step is to get to the front and center speaker and try to turn down the bass setting on each speaker.I shouldn't have to do that, since it has been set this way for over a year. Thats why I am asking if anyone else has had this happen? Its almost like all the bass put out from the back has now all shifted to the front speakers. Is this possible?
Thanks Vid53

You don't mention subwoofer. How do you have the receiver set to operate, small or large. What kind of Spkrs. do you have and how are they hooked up?
MrMike6by9 02-04-07, 09:16 AM How are the mains positioned now (relative to walls, furniture, carpet. and angling) versus before the sonic change?
I have no separate subwoofer. Each front speaker has its own built in sub. They are definitive Technology speakers. The setting is set to small.I did hook up a matrix component switcher and I am checking now to see if that is my problem.
Thanks

Warpdrv 02-04-07, 09:59 AM Not sure why you have your speakers set to small if you have no sub...
I would go in there and change them to large and see how that helps...
I had the speakers set to large and someone suggested to set them to small which I did.
I also tried both settings lfe+ life+main and that didn't help.I did check it without the switcher and that made no difference. My other settings are: ROOM EQ is OFF and my TONE DEFEAT is set to OFF. It just seems like the bass has shifted all to the speaker output and none to the subwoofer output . If I turn up the volume real loud which makes all my speakers vibrate off the walls I can feel the buttkickers somewhat working in the chairs. I think something has happened in the receiver.

Feed a low level signal to your Def. Tech. Subwoofers.( low level in,not LFE)
Unhook the jumpers from the woofers on the back of the towers.
Wire up just the mids and highs.
Set all of your Spkrs. to SMALL. This will send bass to only the subs, giving your system more headroom.
You need to set all of the Spkrs. levels to get a good balance.
I'm not sure how to tell you how to incorporate the Buttkickers into the above.

If you set the speakers to small doesn't that also affect the pre-out jacks?
If the answer to the above is yes, what speaker produces bass below the "small" crossover setting?

Perhaps I should have asked you what model number the Def Tech speakers are before posting answers on how to hook them up.
Maybe we should start with that.

I was assuming that the subwoofers are powered. By setting the speakers to small the bass would be redirected to only the subwoofers. The receiver would then be relieved of having to drive the woofers and the result would be more headroom/ volume.
I should have asked what the model number of the Def Techs are before posting....sorry
The fronts are cinema pro 400 and the center speaker is the clr1000, which all have built in subwoofers. I just don't understand why I need to adjust them at all since I have not touched them for a year and all of a sudden this happens. It just doesn't make any sense.
Thanks for the help

You didn't have any visitors, or as we lovingly call them at work, KTBs (knob-turning ba$tard$), just prior to the occurance did you?
Maybe a well-intentioned friend, babysitter, kids, or mother-in-law, etc.?
Have you looked at the calibration levels? Are they where they used to be?
Sounds like you need to unhook the buttkickers and go though a complete system calibration for starters rather than taking a "poke and hope" approach.
Maybe a complete "factory reset" of the receiver and start from scratch on all the settings, adjustments, and calibration levels.

Excuse me, are you sure they have SUBwoofers in addition to woofers in each enclosure? I'm approaching senior citizenship but I haven't seen/heard of that design in a speaker before. They must be huge cabinets.
YMMV
EDIT: I stand corrected
Yes each speaker has its own powered sub woofer adjustment. Here are the front specs.

I have the 2002TL's and I have tried several different hook up possibilities.
If you can show me a diagram of the rear of the Spkr or a link to a photo of the rear,I'll try to help.
