Since im a newby in these parts, ive been trying to decide between a HTIB or a budget component syste.Heres where I could use an education, what bargain subs give the most bang for the buck? Is there a clear-cut bargain? The room in question is 22' x 24' and I will likely go with a Onkyo or Yamaha tuner, speakers as yet undecided. Thanks for help!

The Bic H-100 sub @ $200 is commonly considered the best budget sub anywhere near the price. You might luck up and find a Vedolyne or athena for a few bucks less and they are good subs at the price point also but considered the performance difference IMO saving a few bucks from the H-100 isn't worth it.

Yea, the 12" BIC H-100 goes for $220-250 average shipped on ebay.
An outstanding deal!

I'm pretty happy with the JBL S120PII. Got it for $275 at J&R. It's not the current budget sub darling that the Bic is but if you do a search for it here you'll turn up some pretty favorable things about it in older threads. I've heard it described as kind of the middle ground between the bargain sub territory and more "serious" subs like an SVS.

Postscript: I'm new here too, so don't listen to me.

What do you want your sub to do? If you just want to feel explosions and hear a reasonable reproduction of bass notes the Dayton 10" sub is quite a bargin.

If you want a greater degree of articulation for music and a reasonable amount of explosion visceral feel the AV123 X-Sub is quite good.

Personally - with the size of your room - I think you're going to want to get more than a $200 sub.

i second the x-sub. just got mine friday. my room is about 13x20 and the little x-sub booms nice and loud and percussive for music and for HT (my primary use) it really brings out the details. i gave it my- From Hell (dts track) test- and it held it really well. i'm actually going to get another one when they're back in stock to round it out nicely.

like the above poster states you may need to spend more though and get a larger sub or 2 smaller ones. another couple of subs that are reasonably priced and have decent ratings are the velodyne-vx 10 and the energy s10.2. both can be had for around $200.

i would stay away from a HTIB. the receiver that it comes with may be fine for what you need but, the speakers and sub included in the box will almost always leave you dissatisfied. maybe not at first because it will sound better to your ears than what you have now but, in time you'll notice the shortcomings in dialogue etc. so you'll end up spending more in the long run.

you're better off getting a nice little reciever and then piece together some nice timbre matched fronts and a center, and getting the surrounds. if you look in the speaker forums you'll see all types of speakers rated for your budget.

When I ordered mine, it shipped next day. I believe that you won't be disappointed with the upgrade from your sony. The H100 is a great deal at the price it is available at. Enjoy your purchase!

I got H-100 from ebay couple of days back and I love it. It was a replacement for the 230 Watts Onkyo sub that came with S790 HTIB and without doubt its a night and day difference.

One of the authorizied ebay sellers is "acousticsounddesign" I think their is another one also but can't remember the name. Just do an ebay search for the H-100/H-100/Bic H-100, you'll find it.

also check out 'b-stock' versions of the subs you are looking at. If you dont care about the cosmetic quality (many claim that they cant tell) you can save some money and potentially get into a better sub.

I would not worry, even a solid performing budget sub with a missing woofer will best a Sony 50 watt PMPO sub. ;) From all accounts the BIC should leave the little Sony in the dust.
